Quantum Dissipative Systems

2004
Our discussion so far has been restricted to classical dissipative systems. We now turn our attention to systems which are quantum mechanical, and yet are in contact with a heat bath which injects dissipation. Quantum mechanics introduces additional frequency scales in the problem through deterministic evolution. The interplay of these frequencies with

Quantum tunneling in dissipative systems

Physical Review A, 1993
As a prelude to a discussion of tunneling in the presence of dissipation, we discuss the damped harmonic oscillator. We show that for a harmonic-oscillator potential, the Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian can be reduced to a sum of independent harmonic-oscillator Hamiltonians by a normal-mode transformation.

Dissipative dynamics of quantum spin systems

Physical Review A, 1992
We analyze the quantum version of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for damped spin motion using a properly tailored Gisin approach to the dissipative quantum mechanics. Coherent- and squeezed-spin-state evolution for a single spin S and a ferromagnetically coupled spin chain are discussed in detail.

Lyapunov Exponent for Quantum Dissipative Systems

Physical Review Letters, 1988

Dissipation in quantum systems

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1995
The quantum dynamics of a mechanical subsystem interacting with a thermal bath is studied. A new approach to dissipated quantum mechanics is proposed which is based on the thermodynamic treatment of the energy balance. Simple application of the theory to ideal gases is considered and equations for the evolution of the main average quantities are ...

Nonlinear Quantum Dissipative Systems

1994
In the preceding chapter we derived linearised solutions to the quantum fluctuations occurring in some nonlinear systems in optical cavities. In these solutions the quantum noise has been treated as a small perturbation to the solutions of the corresponding nonlinear classical problem.

Dissipations in coupled quantum systems

Physical Review A, 2003
We investigate the dynamics of a composite quantum system, comprised of coupled subsystems, of which only one is significantly interacting with the environment. The validity of the conventional ad hoc approach--assuming that relaxation terms can be extracted directly from the master equation of the subsystem interacting with the reservoir--was examined.
