SPECTROPOLARIMETRIC EVIDENCE FOR A KICKED SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE IN THE QUASAR E1821+643 [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
We report spectropolarimetric observations of the quasar E1821+643 (z=0.297), which suggest that it may be an example of gravitational recoil due to anisotropic emission of gravitational waves following the merger of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary.

Major Galaxy Mergers and the Growth of Supermassive Black Holes in Quasars [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2010
Dusty Quasars Quasars are energetic sources thought to be fueled by matter accreting onto black holes a billion times more massive than the Sun. Some quasars are difficult to detect because of surrounding clouds of gas and dust, so much so that this population of objects has remained elusive.

Possible evolution of supermassive black holes from FRI quasars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
We explore the question of the rapid buildup of black hole mass in the early universe employing a growing black hole mass-based determination of both jet and disk powers predicted in recent theoretical work on black hole accretion and jet formation. Despite simplified, even artificial assumptions about accretion and mergers, we identify an interesting ...

A study of [O III]/[O II] lines ratio in type 1 active galactic nucleus: Influence of radio jets and Eddington ratio to narrow line region emission

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 341, Issue 3, Page 300-313, March 2020., 2020
Abstract We analyze emission line properties and their correlations for 18,043 type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the range of 0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.8, based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14 data. We complement the data with photometric measurements from ROSAT, GALEX, 2MASS, and FIRST.

Quasars, supermassive black holes, and host galaxy evolution [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2004
We discuss some recent results from a program to study the relationships between AGNs, super-massive black holes (SMBHs), and their surrounding host galaxies. The results are based on broad emission-line diagnostics of the SMBH masses and metal abundances in a unique sample of 578 Type 1 AGNs.

Evidence for a milliparsec-separation supermassive binary black hole with quasar microlensing

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2022
We report periodic oscillations in the 15-year-long optical light curve of the gravitationally lensed quasar Q J0158−4325 at zs = 1.29. The signal is enhanced during a high magnification microlensing event of the quasar that the fainter lensed image, B, underwent between 2003 and 2010.

A possible close supermassive black-hole binary in a quasar with optical periodicity [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2015
Quasars have long been known to be variable sources at all wavelengths. Their optical variability is stochastic, can be due to a variety of physical mechanisms, and is well-described statistically in terms of a damped random walk model. The recent availability of large collections of astronomical time series of flux measurements (light curves) offers ...

Radiative Feedback from Quasars and the Growth of Supermassive Black Holes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We discuss the role of feedback via photoionization and Compton heating in the co-evolution of massive black holes at the center of spheroidal galaxies and their stellar and gaseous components. We first assess the energetics of the radiative feedback from a typical quasar on the ambient interstellar gas.
