The road to quasars [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2014
AbstractAlthough the extragalactic nature of 3C 48 and other quasi stellar radio sources was discussed as early as 1960 by John Bolton and others, it was rejected largely because of preconceived ideas about what appeared to be unrealistically high radio and optical luminosities.

Gaia Space Mission and Quasars

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2017
Quasars are often considered to be point-like objects. This is largely true and allows for an excellent alignment of the optical positional reference frame of the ongoing ESA mission Gaia with the International Celestial Reference Frame.

Shedding New Light on Weak Emission-line Quasars in the C iv–Hβ Parameter Space

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are a subset of type 1 quasars that exhibit extremely weak Ly α + N v λ 1240 and/or C iv λ 1549 emission lines. We investigate the relationship between emission-line properties and accretion rate for a sample of 230 ...

Quasar Luminosity Function at z = 7

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
We present the quasar luminosity function (LF) at z = 7, measured with 35 spectroscopically confirmed quasars at 6.55 < z < 7.15. The sample of 22 quasars from the Subaru High- z Exploration of Low-Luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) project, combined with 13 ...

On the Formation of the First Quasars [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 2017
AbstractObservations of the most luminous quasars at redshiftz> 6 reveal the existence of numerous supermasssive black holes (>199M⊙) already in place about 12 billion years ago. In addition, the interstellar medium of the galaxies hosting these black holes are observed to be chemically mature systems, with metallicities (Z> Z⊙) and dust ...

Quasars Probing Quasars. II. The Anisotropic Clustering of Optically Thick Absorbers around Quasars [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2007
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We used a sample of 17 Lyman limit systems with column density N_HI > 10^19 cm^-2 selected from 149 projected quasar pair sightlines, to investigate the clustering pattern of optically thick ...

A structure for quasars

open access: yesNew Astronomy Reviews, 2000
We propose a simple unifying structure for the inner regions of quasars and AGN. This empirically derived model links together the BALs, the narrow UV/X-ray ionized absorbers, the BELR, and the Compton scattering/fluorescing regions into a single structure. The model also suggests an origin for the large-scale bi-conical outflows.

The Infrared Traced Star Formation Rates of Associated Absorption Lines Quasars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Some optically selected quasars exhibit Mg ii- associated absorption lines (AALs), and their origin remains unclear. In this paper, we compile a sample of 1769 quasars, with or without Mg ii AALs, of which 1689 are far-infrared (FIR) detected quasars and

ISO Observations of Quasars and Quasar Hosts [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), launched in November 1995, allows us to measure the far-infrared (far-IR) emission of quasars in greater detail and over a wider energy range than previously possible. In this paper, preliminary results in a study of the 5--200 $ m$ continuum of quasars and active galaxies are presented. Comparison of the spectral

Circular Economy Policies and Business Models in the EU Renewable Energy Sector: The Case of Solar Photovoltaic Industry

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The circular economy is an approach to decouple economic growth from environmental impacts. In Europe, its development is driven by policies that guide market dynamics through regulations and by businesses innovating with new circular models.
