An Approximate Quasi-Newton Bundle-Type Method for Nonsmooth Optimization

open access: yesAbstract and Applied Analysis, 2013
An implementable algorithm for solving a nonsmooth convex optimization problem is proposed by combining Moreau-Yosida regularization and bundle and quasi-Newton ideas. In contrast with quasi-Newton bundle methods of Mifflin et al.

Artificial Intelligence–Driven and Digital Practices for Circular Business and Finance: Insights for Advancing Hubs for Circularity

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The emerging concept of Hubs for Circularity (H4Cs) presents an opportunity to create collaborative, self‐sustaining regional industrial ecosystems that drive circular economy transitions at scale. However, the operationalisation of H4Cs faces financial, organisational and data‐driven challenges.

Optimization of 3D‐Printed Structured Packings—Current State and Future Developments

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
This paper gives an overview about structured packing development for distillation, surveying heuristic development cycles, computational fluid dynamics simulations, and additive manufacturing techniques. The emerging application of shape optimization to improve packings is emphasized, and its benefits, impact, and limitations are discussed.

A New Sparse Quasi-Newton Update Method

open access: yesSultan Qaboos University Journal for Science, 2012
Based on the idea of maximum determinant positive definite matrix completion, Yamashita proposed a sparse quasi-Newton update, called MCQN, for unconstrained optimization problems with sparse Hessian structures.

Exploring Tradeoffs in Syngas Production With Solid‐Oxide Electrolysis via Multi‐Objective Optimization

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
This work applies multi‐objective optimization to investigate trade‐offs between different objectives in syngas production with solid‐oxide cell co‐electrolysis. Two system designs are investigated. By systematically exploring tradeoffs between different objectives, insights, and comparisons of the operation of these designs are achieved.

Ultrafast Transitions in X‐Ray Irradiated Solids

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this review, we present current developments on modeling ultrafast transitions in solids triggered by intense, atto‐ to femtosecond pulses from X‐ray free electron lasers. This specific irradiation regime requires dedicated simulation tools based on theoretical and computational methods, involving the elements of classical and quantum ...

On the Proper Treatment of Dynamics in Cognitive Science

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract This essay examines the relevance of dynamical ideas for cognitive science. On its own, the mere mathematical idea of a dynamical system is too weak to serve as a scientific theory of anything, and dynamical approaches within cognitive science are too rich and varied to be subsumed under a single “dynamical hypothesis.” Instead, after first ...

A variational approach to stable principal component pursuit [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We introduce a new convex formulation for stable principal component pursuit (SPCP) to decompose noisy signals into low-rank and sparse representations. For numerical solutions of our SPCP formulation, we first develop a convex variational framework and ...

Creep properties and constitutive model of diabase in deep water conveyance tunnels

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The axial and lateral creep characteristics of diabase were analyzed based on compression creep tests. The nonlinear viscoelastic‐plastic model capable of describing the whole creep process was established based on the fractional derivative and damage theories.
