Forecasting Count Data With Varying Dispersion: A Latent‐Variable Approach

open access: yesJournal of Forecasting, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Count data, such as product sales and disease case counts, are common in business forecasting and many areas of science. Although the Poisson distribution is the best known model for such data, its use is severely limited by its assumption that the dispersion is a fixed function of the mean, which rarely holds in real‐world scenarios.

Health Preferences and Sorting in the City

open access: yesHealth Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There are large health inequalities between neighborhoods in many cities of the world. This paper studies individuals' sorting based on health amenities and exposes an important connection between health preferences and the housing market. I estimate a neighborhood choice model using geolocated data from a health survey in New York City and ...

Harvest increase and culling as tools for managing chronic wasting disease in white‐tailed deer

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We used an agent‐based model to simulate the effect of CWD management on a white‐tailed deer population in northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois. Our results suggest that wildlife managers should reconsider how and if they should manage CWD. Abstract Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy that affects white‐tailed ...

Continual Learning With Quasi-Newton Methods

open access: yesIEEE Access
Catastrophic forgetting remains a major challenge when neural networks learn tasks sequentially. Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) attempts to address this problem by introducing a Bayesian-inspired regularization loss to preserve knowledge of ...

Fatigue Life Prediction of Coiled Tubing Based on Optimized BP Neural Network

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2023
When the standard BP neural network is used to predict the fatigue life of coiled tubing, local minimum is easily fallen into and training time is too long.To solve these problems, the momental gradient descent method,quasi-Newton algorithm and one-step ...

Structure‐Aware Machine Learning for Polymers: A Hierarchical Graph Network for Predicting Properties From Statistical Ensembles

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
This work presents a structure‐aware graph convolutional network that models polymers as statistical ensembles to predict macroscopic properties. By combining topologically realistic graphs generated via kinetic Monte Carlo simulations with explicit molar mass distributions, the framework achieves high accuracy in classifying architectures and ...

Bending Analysis of Thickness‐ and Shear‐Deformable Materially Imperfect Composite Shells With von Kármán‐Type Geometric Nonlinearities

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical System Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Geometrically nonlinear static analysis of materially imperfect composite doubly curved shells is investigated via the generalised differential quadrature method. The effects of both shear and thickness deformation are considered through a thickness‐ and shear‐deformable third‐order theory formulated in curvilinear coordinates, while the ...

Forward Kinematics Analysis of 2RUS/RRS Parallel Mechanism

open access: yesJixie chuandong, 2018
The iterative search method( Newton or Quasi-Newton) is an important numerical method for solving the forward kinematics( FK) problem of parallel mechanisms. Due to the extremely displacement singularity in the limbs, the search space is easy to be out of
