Informing the potential of mature temperate forests as natural climate solutions: Changed fine root biomass and morphology under elevated CO2

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The land carbon sink absorbs approximately 25% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, with forests accounting for most. Managing forests as Natural Climate Solutions is therefore a societal imperative, requiring models of where and how long carbon resides within these ecosystems. We investigated the effects of elevated CO2 on fine roots, the primary source of

The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) as an ally for the control of the invasive yellow‐legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax)

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 81, Issue 4, Page 2237-2247, April 2025.
The predatory effect of the honey‐buzzard affects the reproductive performance of Asian‐hornet colonies, decreasing the density of workers over distance and time. The foraging distances of the honey‐buzzard concentrates within the first 2000 m from nest, which supports the results observed.

Factors affecting in vitro propagation of Quercus robur L.

open access: yesTree Physiology, 1988
Explants from five clones of Quercus robur (three of juvenile origin and two from adult trees) were cultured on Gresshoff and Doy medium supplemented with 0.2 mg l(-1) 6-benzylaminopurine. Shoot proliferation from apical and nodal segments was influenced by both clone and type of explant.

The use of physiological, biochemical and morpho-anatomical traits in tree breeding for improved water-use efficiency of Quercus robur L.

open access: yesForest Systems, 2019
Aim of study: In the present paper the nature and level of co-dependence between leaf functional traits and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi) were studied in one-year-old Quercus robur L.

How to stay wild in a highly domesticated landscape? Spatiotemporal behaviour of wolves in Germany

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wild animals can adapt to the increasing presence of humans by either becoming accustomed to it or by avoiding humans by spatiotemporal separation. The return of the wolf to the German lowlands raised the opportunity to study wolf behaviour in one of the most densely populated and fragmented countries in Europe, in an area where topography offers no ...
