Biochars are used to improve soil quality and crop productivity as well as to increase carbon sequestration in soil. However, it is important to identify the characteristics of biochar prior to its application because of the positive and negative effects

Production rate of quercus serrata pollen grains in a secondary quercus serrata forest [PDF]
The production rate of Quercus serrata pollen grains from a secondary forest near Tokyo was estimated by measuring annual fall rates of male catkins and number of pollen in a male catkin. The estimated production rate ranges from 4.6×10^<11> to 2.2×10^<12> no. ha^<-1>y^<-1> during 1988-1991. The mean value for the four years is 1.4×10^<12> no. ha^<-1>y^

Molecular evolution of terpene synthase underlying the diversification of isoprene emission in Fagaceae. [PDF]
Isoprene emission in oaks originated from convergent adaptive evolution of terpene synthases, involving a substrate shift from monoterpene to isoprene production within a Fagaceae‐specific TPS lineage. Abstract Plants emit a wide range of volatile organic compounds, among which isoprene is the most abundant and atmospherically influential. Although oak

Tree-ring structure determines the temporal coordination between xylem growth and the gain in hydraulic conductivity in the outermost ring. [PDF]
Summary The study of seasonal xylem hydraulics has predominantly focused on embolism‐induced losses, whereas growth‐driven increases in hydraulic capacity have received little attention. We assessed the intra‐annual dynamics of xylem formation and gain of conductivity in the current‐year ring of three species with contrasting tree‐ring structure ...

Negative density dependence regulates two tree species at later life stage in a temperate forest. [PDF]
Numerous studies have demonstrated that tree survival is influenced by negative density dependence (NDD) and differences among species in shade tolerance could enhance coexistence via resource partitioning, but it is still unclear how NDD affects tree ...

Changes in stand biomass, stem density, mortality and recruitment were monitored from 2000 to 2016 at 5- or 6-year intervals of Mt. Geumsan (GMS). The GMS had 34 woody plant species and 2698 living stems (DBH ≥ 2 cm) ha−1 in 2016, with an increase in ...
