Does a decision support tool designed to depict West Nile virus risk explain variation in ruffed grouse Bonasa umbellus use of managed forests?

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Infectious diseases are commonly cited as significant contributors to wildlife population declines. It is, therefore, important to investigate the extent to which tools designed to mitigate the effects of infectious diseases explain wildlife responses to habitat management.

Dietary shift of the common leopard Panthera pardus in and around Bani Wildlife Sanctuary, western Himalayas: implications for conservation and human–wildlife conflict

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Understanding the dietary patterns of apex predator like the common leopard Panthera pardus is essential for evaluating their ecological role, particularly in landscapes where human–wildlife conflict is prevalent. In this context, this study investigates the seasonal diet composition of the common leopard in and around the Bani Wildlife Sanctuary, a ...

Similarity analysis between species of the genus Quercus L. (Fagaceae) in southern Italy based on the fractal dimension [PDF]

open access: yesPhytoKeys, 2018
The fractal dimension (FD) is calculated for seven species of the genus Quercus L. in Calabria region (southern Italy), five of which have a marcescent-deciduous and two a sclerophyllous character.

Seed removal in two coexisting oak species: ecological consequences of seed size, plant cover and seed-drop timing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
11 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures, 81 references.Seed predation and dispersal can critically influence plant community structure and dynamics. Inter-specific differences arising at these early stages play a crucial role on tree recruitment patterns, which ...

SSR Markers for Quercus suber Tree Identification and Embryo Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Heredity, 2001
Three Quercus simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from nuclear DNA extracts of trees and in vitro-induced haploid embryos from anther cultures of Quercus suber L. These markers were sufficiently polymorphic to identify 10 of 12 trees located in two Spanish natural areas.

Nests in trees are as good as or better than cliffs for two formerly persecuted, primarily cliff nesting eagles in Spain: a cautionary tale in defining the habitat of range‐restricted or threatened species

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
In the late‐20th century, golden and Bonelli's eagles suffered population declines on the Iberian Peninsula, partly due to human persecution. Habitat assessments – especially for Bonelli's eagles – always found or assumed strong associations with cliffs that provided nesting sites.

ESTIMACIÓN DE LA BIOMASA FORESTAL PARA LAS ESPECIES QUERCUS ROTUNDIFOLIA Y QUERCUS SUBER BASADA EN IMÁGENES DEL SATÉLITE QUICKBIRD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
para una buena gestión. Actualmente las técnicas de inventario y monitoreo de biomasa forestal son usualmente lentas, muy trabajosas y de elevado coste, verificándose así la necesidad de desarrollar otras técnicas, que sean fiables y con costes ...

Tradeoffs between brain and digestive tissues across elevations in Typhlomys daloushanensis: evidence for sexual dimorphism

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
To cope with highly stochastic and/or heterogeneous environmental conditions, animals must balance energy resource allocation across physiological processes. The digestive tract and brain exhibit structural variations under strong developmental and selective pressures that vary across environmental gradients both between and within species.
