Combining fields for query expansion and adaptive query expansion [PDF]
In this paper, we aim to improve query expansion for ad-hoc retrieval, by proposing a more fine-grained term reweighting process. This fine-grained process uses statistics from the representation of documents in various fields, such as their titles, the anchor text of their incoming links, and their body content.

Large knowledge bases are being developed to describe entities, their attributes, and their relationships to other entities. Prior research mostly focuses on the construction of knowledge bases, while how to use them in information retrieval is still an open problem.

Query expansion using associated queries
Proceedings of the twelfth international conference on Information and knowledge management - CIKM '03, 2003Hundreds of millions of users each day use web search engines to meet their information needs. Advances in web search effectiveness are therefore perhaps the most significant public outcomes of IR research. Query expansion is one such method for improving the effectiveness of ranked retrieval by adding additional terms to a query.

Social semantic query expansion
ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, 2013Weak semantic techniques rely on the integration of Semantic Web techniques with social annotations and aim to embrace the strengths of both. In this article, we propose a novel weak semantic technique for query expansion. Traditional query expansion techniques are based on the computation of two-dimensional co-occurrence matrices.

On relevance, time and query expansion
Proceedings of the 20th ACM international conference on Information and knowledge management, 2011We present the results of our exploratory analysis on the relationship that exists between relevance and time. We observe how the amount of documents published in a given interval of time is related to the probability of relevance, and, using the time series analysis, we show the existence of a correlation between time and relevance.

Probabilistic query expansion using query logs
Proceedings of the eleventh international conference on World Wide Web - WWW '02, 2002Query expansion has long been suggested as an effective way to resolve the short query and word mismatching problems. A number of query expansion methods have been proposed in traditional information retrieval. However, these previous methods do not take into account the specific characteristics of web searching; in particular, of the availability of ...

Query-drift prevention for robust query expansion
Proceedings of the 31st annual international ACM SIGIR conference on Research and development in information retrieval, 2008Pseudo-feedback-based automatic query expansion yields effective retrieval performance on average, but results in performance inferior to that of using the original query for many information needs. We address an important cause of this robustness issue, namely, the query drift problem, by fusing the results retrieved in response to the original query ...

Query expansion based on ontology for Vietnamese query
Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications & Services, 2012User's query sometimes does not fully reflect the semantics, so the information retrieval systems return no results as expected results, it is necessary to add semantics to the user's query. The paper represents how to add semantics into a query in Vietnamese language based on Ontology of Object Member Property (OOMP) by improved Similar Noun Phrase ...

Semantic approaches for query expansion
Evolutionary Intelligence, 2021To increase the Information Retrieval System’s efficiency, there is a requirement to expand the native user query. There are many approaches to enhance the user query in which the primary method consists of semantic-based query expansion (QE). In a semantic-based QE approach, relevant documents are retrieved by considering all the similar terms of a ...

Towards Interactive Query Expansion
ACM SIGIR Forum, 1988In an era of online retrieval, it is appropriate to offer guidance to users wishing to improve their initial queries. One form of such guidance could be short lists of suggested terms gathered from feedback, nearest neighbors, and term variants of original query terms.
