Exploiting entities for query expansion
ACM SIGIR Forum, 2014A substantial fraction of web search queries contain references to entities, such as persons, organizations, and locations. This signi cant presence of named entities in queries provides an opportunity for web search engines to improve their understanding of the user's information need. In this thesis, we investigate the entity-oriented query

Proceedings of the 26th annual international ACM SIGIR conference on Research and development in informaion retrieval - SIGIR '03, 2003
The effectiveness of queries in information retrieval can be improved through query expansion. This technique automatically introduces additional query terms that are statistically likely to match documents on the intended topic. However, query expansion techniques rely on fixed parameters.

Techniques for Efficient Query Expansion
2004Query expansion is a well-known method for improving average effectiveness in information retrieval. However, the most effective query expansion methods rely on costly retrieval and processing of feedback documents. We explore alternative methods for reducing query-evaluation costs, and propose a new method based on keeping a brief summary of each ...

Query Expansion Based on Topics
2008 Fifth International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, 2008Query expansion technology and formal concept analysis (FCA) are two effective methods for improving the query precision in the information retrieval field. In this paper, formal concept analysis which aims at modeling concepts is adopted to expand the user query and a new query expansion approach is proposed.

Optimizing a Query by Transformation and Expansion
2017In the biomedical sector not only the amount of information produced and uploaded into the web is enormous, but also the number of sources where these data can be found. Clinicians and researchers spend huge amounts of time on trying to access this information and to filter the most important answers to a given question.

Query Expansion in Enterprise Search
Proceedings of the ACM Symposium on Document Engineering 2018, 2018Although web search remains an active research area, interest in enterprise search has not kept up with the information requirements of the contemporary workforce. To address these issues, this research aims to develop, implement, and study the query expansion techniques most effective at improving relevancy in enterprise search.

ON TERM SELECTION FOR QUERY EXPANSION
Journal of Documentation, 1990In the framework of a relevance feedback system, term values or term weights may be used to (a) select new terms for inclusion in a query, and/or (b) weight the terms for retrieval purposes once selected. It has sometimes been assumed that the same weighting formula should be used for both purposes.

External Query Expansion in the Blogosphere. [PDF]
We describe the participation of the University of Amsterdam’s ILPS group in the blog track at TREC 2008. We mainly explored different ways of using external corpora to expand the original query. In the blog post retrieval task we did not succeed in improving over a simple baseline (equal weights for both the expanded and original query).

Studying Query Expansion Effectiveness
2009Query expansion is an effective technique in improving the retrieval performance for ad-hoc retrieval. However, query expansion can also fail, leading to a degradation of the retrieval performance. In this paper, we aim to provide a better understanding of query expansion by an empirical study on what factors can affect query expansion, and how these ...

A Framework for Automatic Query Expansion
2010The objective of this paper is to provide a framework and computational model for automatic query expansion using psuedo relevance feedback. We expect that our model can be helpful in dealing with many important aspects in automatic query expansion in an efficient way. We have performed experiments based on our model using TREC data set.
