Adaptive traffic signal control using approximate dynamic programming
This thesis presents a study on an adaptive traffic signal controller for real-time operation. An approximate dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is developed for controlling traffic signals at isolated intersection and in distributed traffic networks.

ABSTRACT Networked control systems (NCSs) often suffer from performance degradation due to limited communication bandwidth, which can cause data transmission conflicts and packet loss. Existing scheduling strategies may fail to simultaneously meet the real‐time requirements and the importance of multisensor data, and they are particularly vulnerable ...

Performance Approximation and Design of Pick-and-Pass Order Picking Systems
In this paper, we discuss an approximation method based on G/G/m queuing network modeling using Whitt’s (1983) queuing network analyzer to analyze pick-and-pass order picking systems.

AN APPROXIMATE SOLUTION OF THE HETEROGENEOUS MULTISERVER QUEUING PROBLEM
The exact solution of the M/M/m/k queuing problem for the case of different capacity servers requires extensive process time and memory space. An approximation method which reduces the necessary solution effort drastically is proposed.

Some Markovian Queuing Retrial Systems under light-traffic conditions
The asymptotic behavior of the time of the first loss of a demand in Markovian single-channel and multichannel queuing retrial systems with a finite buffer and an external Markovian environment is analyzed.

Multiscale Queuing Analysis of Long-Range-Dependent Network Traffic
Journal PaperThis paper develops a novel approach to queuing analysis tailor-made for multiscale long-range-dependent (LRD) traffic models. We review two such traffic models, the wavelet-domain independent Gaussian model (WIG) and the multifractal ...

Climate Change and (Mal)Adaptation in Tourism‐Intensive Alpine Regions
Abstract Tourism, especially in winter, accounts for a large share of economic income in Alpine regions. At the same time, these regions are more severely affected by climate change, leading to shorter winter seasons and reduced snow cover. This presents a pressing issue for areas reliant on income from winter tourism through activities such as skiing.

Multiscale Queuing Analysis of Long-Range-Dependent Network Traffic
This paper develops a novel approach to queuing analysis tailor-made for multiscale long-rangedependent (LRD) traffic models. We review two such traffic models, the wavelet-domain independent Gaussian model (WIG) and the multifractal wavelet model (MWM).

The Gender of Fossil Fuels: Oil and Domestic Perils in Mandate Palestine
ABSTRACT This article explores the gender dynamics behind the rise of kerosene – an oil derivative – as the main domestic fuel in Mandate Palestine. It argues that these dynamics were constitutive in determining who began to use oil, where and for what purposes, in turn demonstrating that women in Palestine were the promoters and targets of a campaign ...
