In Situ Amine Formation to Modulate MOF‐Derived PdIn N‐Doped Carbon Catalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An amine‐assisted approach converts PdIn‐MOF into PdIn intermetallic nanoparticles embedded in N‐doped carbon. In situ‐generated amines trigger early Pd nucleation, producing smaller PdIn domains than direct pyrolysis. Amine sterics and basicity tune composition and particle size, while solvent and amine co‐determine textural features.

Porous Hybrid Soft Actuators From Liquid Crystal Networks and Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystal Templated Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The graphic illustrates the design of a hybrid bilayer composed of a liquid crystal hydrogel (LCH) and a liquid crystal network (LCN). The figure highlights the magnetic alignment of the chromonic hydrogel and the thermal‐responsive actuation of the LCN along with the LCH when both layers are aligned or misaligned, enabling programmable, light‐driven ...

Using Resurrected Ancestral Proviral Proteins to Engineer Virus Resistance

open access: yesCell Reports, 2017
Proviral factors are host proteins hijacked by viruses for processes essential for virus propagation such as cellular entry and replication. Pathogens and their hosts co-evolve. It follows that replacing a proviral factor with a functional ancestral form

Short transmembrane domains with high-volume exoplasmic halves determine retention of Type II membrane proteins in the Golgi complex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
It is still unclear why some proteins that travel along the secretory pathway are retained in the Golgi complex whereas others make their way to the plasma membrane.
