Type of Carbonate Production, Sedimentary and Tectonic Evolution of the Pliocene Mixed Carbonate Siliciclastic Unit (Macco) in the Tarquinia Basin, Central Italy

open access: yesBasin Research, Volume 38, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
Piacenzian mixed carbonate‐siliciclastic succession (‘Macco’ unit) deposited on the passive margin of the Tyrrhenian back‐arc basin. Sedimentation was controlled by syn‐sedimentary tectonics, with NW–SE first‐order faults (3–4 km) creating accommodation space and NE–SW second‐order faults (~0.5 km) influencing facies distribution and growth structures.

Diatoms–copepods: An evolutionary arms race

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Diatoms and copepods are dominating and diverse groups of phytoplankton and zooplankton, respectively. Diatoms account for 25–40% of ocean primary production, and their main predators, copepods, are arguably the most abundant group of metazoans in the ocean, typically accounting for ~ 80% of zooplankton biomass.

Bacterial Cellulose Synthase Catalyzes the Formation of Chitin

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 15, 20 April 2026.
Recombinant BcsA‐B from Rhodobacter sphaeroides is shown to cleave UDP‐GlcNAc (uridine diphosphate N‐acetylglucosamine), generating chitin with distinct β‐chitin Raman bands. These findings reveal that a cellulose synthase can process an alternative nucleotide sugar, providing biochemical evidence for the co‐synthesis of cellulose and chitin.

Revealing Seasonal Patterns and Metabolism of Microbial Plankton in a Productive Coastal Upwelling System

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Increasing our knowledge about the structure and metabolism of the microbial plankton community in coastal upwelling systems is essential for efficiently managing the resources of these highly productive ecosystems. Here we explore seasonal variations of this community in the NW Iberian coastal upwelling system by measuring variables informing

Characteristics of Pain in Patients Diagnosed With Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders. An Observational Study

open access: yesPain Research and Management, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background This study aimed to describe pain characteristics in patients diagnosed with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and to identify factors associated with moderate to severe pain at diagnosis. Methods Ninety‐six patients were retrospectively identified through the Ce.Ma.R.S. registry (2017–2022).

Fuelling Unspecific Peroxygenases with In‐Situ Generated H2O2 Using Enzyme Fusions

open access: yesChemCatChem, Volume 17, Issue 22, November 24, 2025.
Enzyme fusion constructs comprised of formate dehydrogenase and azoreductase can produce hydrogen peroxide especially in the presence of FMN. These enzyme fusions are utilized for in situ hydrogen peroxide production and are coupled to an unspecific peroxygenase for a slower peroxide delivery.
