Bacterial Cellulose Synthase Catalyzes the Formation of Chitin
ChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 15, 20 April 2026.Recombinant BcsA‐B from Rhodobacter sphaeroides is shown to cleave UDP‐GlcNAc (uridine diphosphate N‐acetylglucosamine), generating chitin with distinct β‐chitin Raman bands. These findings reveal that a cellulose synthase can process an alternative nucleotide sugar, providing biochemical evidence for the co‐synthesis of cellulose and chitin.
