Bacterial Cellulose Synthase Catalyzes the Formation of Chitin

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 15, 20 April 2026.
Recombinant BcsA‐B from Rhodobacter sphaeroides is shown to cleave UDP‐GlcNAc (uridine diphosphate N‐acetylglucosamine), generating chitin with distinct β‐chitin Raman bands. These findings reveal that a cellulose synthase can process an alternative nucleotide sugar, providing biochemical evidence for the co‐synthesis of cellulose and chitin.

Divergent Oxidation Reactions of E‐ and Z‐Allylic Primary Alcohols by an Unspecific Peroxygenase

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 137, Issue 12, March 17, 2025.
The unspecific peroxygenase rAaeUPO‐PaDa‐I‐H catalyses the oxidation of Z‐ and E‐allylic alcohols with complementary selectivity, giving epoxide and aldehyde/acid products, respectively. Both reactions were performed on a preparative scale with yields of up to 80 %, and the epoxidations proceed with excellent enantioselectivity (99 % ee).

Revealing Seasonal Patterns and Metabolism of Microbial Plankton in a Productive Coastal Upwelling System

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Increasing our knowledge about the structure and metabolism of the microbial plankton community in coastal upwelling systems is essential for efficiently managing the resources of these highly productive ecosystems. Here we explore seasonal variations of this community in the NW Iberian coastal upwelling system by measuring variables informing

Characteristics of Pain in Patients Diagnosed With Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders. An Observational Study

open access: yesPain Research and Management, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background This study aimed to describe pain characteristics in patients diagnosed with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and to identify factors associated with moderate to severe pain at diagnosis. Methods Ninety‐six patients were retrospectively identified through the Ce.Ma.R.S. registry (2017–2022).

Fuelling Unspecific Peroxygenases with In‐Situ Generated H2O2 Using Enzyme Fusions

open access: yesChemCatChem, Volume 17, Issue 22, November 24, 2025.
Enzyme fusion constructs comprised of formate dehydrogenase and azoreductase can produce hydrogen peroxide especially in the presence of FMN. These enzyme fusions are utilized for in situ hydrogen peroxide production and are coupled to an unspecific peroxygenase for a slower peroxide delivery.

Organellar Genomes of Three Globally Important Nanoplanktonic Diatoms Refine Their Taxon‐Specific Distribution and Succession Patterns in the Northwest Atlantic

open access: yesJournal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, Volume 72, Issue 5, September/October 2025.
ABSTRACT Nanoplanktonic diatoms (2–20 μm) are a significant yet historically understudied component of marine ecosystems. We investigated three recently isolated nanoplanktonic diatoms from the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (NWA): Minidiscus spinulatus, Mediolabrus comicus, and Minidiscus trioculatus.

ParAquaSeq, a Database of Ecologically Annotated rRNA Sequences Covering Zoosporic Parasites Infecting Aquatic Primary Producers in Natural and Industrial Systems

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 6, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Amplicon sequencing tools such as metabarcoding are commonly used for thorough characterisation of microbial diversity in natural samples. They mostly rely on the amplification of conserved universal markers, mainly ribosomal genes, allowing the taxonomic assignment of barcodes.
