Tree height and stem growth dynamics in a Scots pine dominated boreal forest

open access: yesTrees, Forests and People
Tree growth is a key forest ecosystem service and essential for carbon sequestration and biomass production. However, the intra-seasonal dynamics of tree height and stem diameter growth have been difficult to measure hampering the understanding of the ...

Detrending ability of several regression equations in tree-ring research: a case study based on tree-ring data of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.])

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2011
The aim of this study was to investigate tree-ring width variability and to distinguish groups of trees with similar growth trends in order to study tree growth responses to various stand and site conditions. The methods of cluster analysis were employed

Bioinspired Adaptive Surfaces for Intelligent Liquid Manipulation: Progressing From Passive and Active to Hybrid Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review examines passive, active, and hybrid liquid manipulation strategies, highlighting hybrid approaches as an emerging route to reconcile energy efficiency with adaptive control. By actively reconstructing passive surfaces to store programmable interfacial energy, hybrid systems enable flexible yet low‐power liquid transport, with perspectives ...

Orthogonal least squares algorithm for training multi-output radial basis function networks

open access: yes, 1992
A constructive learning algorithm for multioutput radial basis function networks is presented. Unlike most network learning algorithms, which require a fixed network structure, this algorithm automatically determines an adequate radial basis function ...

Soft Skins With Reversible Thickness Morphing: Materials, Mechanisms, and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Evolution of electronic skin (e‐skin) technologies toward adaptive, multifunctional soft skins. Phase I highlights early rigid and discrete sensory interfaces. Phase II shows the transition toward flexible, stretchable, and large‐area e‐skin. Phase III captures the emergence of computational e‐skin.

Radial Basis Function Assisted Turbo Equalization

open access: yes, 2003
This paper presents a turbo equalization (TEQ) scheme, which employs a radial basis function (RBF)-based equalizer instead of the conventional trellis-based equalizer of Douillard et al.

Influence of climate factors on the formation of radial increment of walnut wood

open access: yesНаукові праці Лісівничої академії наук України
It has been studied that the climatic conditions of the Right-bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, in particular the amount of precipitation and average monthly temperatures, affect the growth and development of walnut, a characteristic species of this region.

Mechanically Assisted Magnetic Actuation in Ceramic‐Based Microscrolls for Fast and Durable Soft Robotic Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ceramic‐based V2O5/Fe3O4 hybrid films are shaped into butterfly‐proboscis‐inspired microscroll actuators. Magnetic triggering initiates unrolling, while geometry‐programmed elastic strain energy drives rapid recoil, enabling fast, reversible, durable, and load‐bearing actuation under near‐field magnetic stimulation.

Changes in radial increment of host and nonhost tree species with gypsy moth defoliation

open access: yes, 1999
Ring widths from 1458 trees from Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey were measured to determine the influence of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) defoliation on both hosts (primarily oaks (Quercus spp.)) and nonhosts.
