Fifty Years Later: Revisiting Viking 2 Seismic Signals Through InSight
Abstract For nearly 50 years, the origin of the candidate seismic signals recorded by Viking 2 remained unresolved because of limited instrumental sensitivity, onboard observation, data compression, and the absence of Martian seismic context. Here we reconstruct the Viking seismic workflow and reinterpret the two Viking candidate events, recorded on ...

Borehole seismic methods for opencast coal exploration [PDF]
Surface seismic techniques lack the resolution to image the top 100m or so of the earth's surface necessary for opencast coal exploration. The work reported in this thesis is the development of borehole seismic methods making use of the closely spaced ...

Global seismic energy scaling relationships based on the type of faulting [PDF]
We derived scaling relationships for different seismic energy metrics for earthquakes around the globe with MW > 6.0 from 1990 to 2022. The seismic energy estimations were derived with two methodologies, the first based on the velocity flux ...

Quantifying the Role of 3D Fault Geometry Complexities on Slow and Fast Earthquakes
Abstract Traditional models of slow slip events (SSEs) oversimplify fault geometry, although imaging shows subduction faults are segmented and complex. We examine how fault interactions control slip behavior using 3D quasi‐dynamic simulations of two parallel faults with uniform rate‐weakening friction accelerated by hierarchical matrices.

A theoretical basis of the moment magnitude scale
To measure the size of an earthquake, we can use two physically different quantities: the radiated seismic energy $$E_{{\text{R}}}$$ E R , from which seismic magnitude scales are defined, and the seismic moment $$M_{0}$$ M 0 .

Rapid estimation of parameters related to the 28 March 2025 M7.9 earthquake in Myanmar
At 14:20 (Beijing time) on March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Mandalay region in central Myanmar. In response, the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration, initiated a rapid scientific assessment involving ...

Abstract Fault‐slip reversals indicate transient stress changes and may illuminate earthquake preparation processes. Here we present high‐resolution observations of sub‐millimetric creep and slip reversals on the Altaquelle Fault, a Quaternary normal fault in the southern Vienna Basin, preceding a regionally significant intraplate earthquake sequence ...

Hydrogen‐Bond Symmetrization in Hydrous Aluminous Silica Enhances Deep‐Mantle Water Cycle
Abstract (Al, H)‐bearing CaCl2‐type SiO2 serves as a key water carrier in Earth's deep‐water cycle. Evolution of hydrogen‐bond symmetrization in this phase was measured up to 62 GPa and 800 K by synchrotron infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction.

MNAT: A Simulation Tool for Underwater Radiated Noise
Shipping expansion, offshore energy generation, fish farming, and construction work radiate high levels of underwater noise, which may critically stress marine ecosystems.

Listening to Tsunami Waves Induced by Glacier Calving
Abstract Processes at the ice–ocean interface play a central role in regulating the stability of marine‐terminating glaciers and ice sheets and drive ocean freshening and mixing. Iceberg calving—a mechanical loss of ice—generates ocean waves and promotes water‐mass exchange in glacierized bays.
