Seismic scattering signatures of small-scale heterogeneities: examples from the Mount Messenger Formation, New Zealand [PDF]
Heterogeneity that is on a length scale just below that of a seismic wavelength is at the limit of resolution but may still cause significant wave scattering.

Abstract The recognition that relay zones along faults can act as barriers to earthquake propagation implies that rupture size may not be random and earthquakes are constrained by fault geometry. Resolution and observational biases can, however, complicate the integration of actual fault zone geometries into deterministic modeling strategies, thereby ...

Energy radiated from a fluctuating selfdual string
We compute the energy that is radiated from a fluctuating selfdual string in the large-N limit of AN-1 theory using the AdS-CFT correspondence. We find that the radiated energy is given by a non-local expression integrated over the string world-sheet. We

Abstract Crustal thickness (or Moho depth) is a key parameter for many geological and geophysical models. Despite this we have a limited number of measurements, typically from seismic receiver functions, to constrain variations in crustal thickness.

The use of FRPs in seismic repair and retrofit: experimental verification [PDF]
The application of FRPs in the seismic repair and retrofit of structures is addressed. The results from a few tests on full-scale structures, repaired and/or retrofitted with composites, performed at the ELSA laboratory are presented and ...

The properties of rockfalls, such as the volume and geometry of the detached rock mass as well as the number and diameter of rock fragments, greatly affect their propagated behavior, and different strategies are required to mitigate rockfall hazards ...

Abstract Chlorite is thought to be one of the major water‐carrying phases in subduction zones, both within the slab and in the mantle wedge. Its presence has previously been linked to common seismological observations at subduction zones, including P and S wave anisotropy as well as high VP/VS ratios (>1.8) in the mantle wedge.

Attenuation and velocity structure in the area of Pozzuoli-Solfatara (Campi Flegrei, Italy) for the estimate of local site response [PDF]
In the present work I infer the 1D shear-wave velocity model in the volcanic area of Pozzuoli-Solfatara using the dispersion properties of both Rayleigh waves generated by artificial explosions and microtremor.
