Regional Estimates of Radiated Seismic Energy
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2002We revise the spectral technique for estimating radiated energy from recordings of large earthquakes at regional distances (Δ 27.5 km from the source, we model the geometrical spreading of the regional wavefield as r – γ where γ = 0.5 for f ≤ 0.2 Hz and γ = 0.7 for f ≥ 0.25 Hz.

AbstractDebris flows represent a major hazard in mountainous areas, due to their rapid motion along steep channels and to the transport of large sediment volumes, including large boulders. In this paper, we present data of channelized debris flows characterized by different velocities and sediment concentrations recorded in an instrumented channel ...

Radiated seismic energy and strain energy release in laboratory dynamic tensile fracture
pure and applied geophysics, 1986Tensile dynamic fractures were propagated under two experimental congifurations for the purpose of assessing the relative amount of strain energy release that is consumed as fracture energy and radiated as seismic waves. The configurations used were (1) application of localized thermal stresses to 2.29 mm-thick plates of soda-lime glass and (2) double ...

The seismic spectrum, radiated energy, and the Savage and Wood inequality for complex earthquakes
Tectonophysics, 1991Abstract We have integrated velocity squared spectra in order to determine the seismic energy radiated during fault rupture. The high frequency spectral fall-off and the shape of the spectrum at the corner frequency are critical to the energy calculation.

On the determination of radiated seismic energy and related source parameters
Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1984AbstractThe determination of radiated seismic energy on the one hand, and of source size and static stress drop on the other, depends in principle on a representation of different parts of the source spectrum. In practice with band-limited data from a sparse network, the required source parameterization is often the same.

Determination of source moment and radiated seismic energy from broadband recordings
Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1982Abstract A main concern of broadband seismology is an extended standard analysis of seismograms including routine determinations of source moment and radiated seismic energy. For this purpose practical procedures and algorithms must be developed for the following main steps: the recovery of true ground motion, criteria for the estimation of pulse ...

Energy balance of a drill-bit seismic source, part 1: Rotary energy and radiation properties
Geophysics, 2005Abstract An issue in seismic-while-drilling (SWD) technology is to characterize the dynamic and radiation properties of the drill-bit source working under different operational conditions. The energy requirements, power losses, local crack effects, radiation, and near-field effects associated with rotary drilling are analyzed to ...

The 25 October 2010 Mentawai earthquake has magnitude Mw 7.7 and shallow depth (12 km). Although the local people of Sikakap - the closed island near epicenter (78.33 km) only felt low shaking (II-III Mercally Intensity), it rised tsunami 7.4 m height causing casualties 447 people died. We suggested the phenomenon is the tsunami earthquake.

The spectral amplitude fields of seismic waves produced by directed (non-spherical) and undirected (spherical) explosive sources are described. The following four cases were investigated: a spherical source located at the bottom of a borehole, a spherical, a hemi-spherical, and a conical source placed at the wall of a trench.
