Radiative transfer in moving media II. Solution of the radiative transfer equation in axial symmetry

open access: yes, 2005
A new method for the formal solution of the 2D radiative transfer equation in axial symmetry in the presence of arbitrary velocity fields is presented.

An assessment of methods for computing radiative forcing in climate models

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2015
Because the radiative forcing is rarely computed separately when performing climate model simulations, several alternative methods have been developed to estimate both the instantaneous (or direct) forcing and the adjusted forcing.

Effect of Water Aging on the Mechanical Properties of Hybrid Carbon/Aramid Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the mechanical properties of Carbon/Aramid intraply hybrid fiber‐reinforced Elium composites under 6 months of water aging. After aging, flexural strength decreases by 25.89%, tensile strength by 4.40%, and fracture toughness by 21.56%.

X‐Ray Computed Tomography Quantifies Primary Phases and Reveals Crack Morphology in High‐Cycle Fatigue of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Primary phases and a fatigue crack are studied in a forged blank of an aluminum alloy using synchrotron and laboratory X‐ray computed tomography. To image the crack, the fatigue test is interrupted, and a static tensile load is applied to open the crack.

The formation of IRIS diagnostics I. A quintessential model atom of Mg II and general formation properties of the Mg II h&k lines

open access: yes, 2013
NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) space mission will study how the solar atmosphere is energized. IRIS contains an imaging spectrograph that covers the Mg II h&k lines as well as a slit-jaw imager centered at Mg II k.

Transfer Equation in General Curvilinear Coordinates

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2011
The differential operator of the monochromatic polarized radiative transfer equation is studied in case of statistically homogeneous turbid medium in Euclidean three-dimensional space, with arbitrary curvilinear coordinate system defined in it.

A MEMS Device Capable of Measuring Near-Field Thermal Radiation between Membranes

open access: yesSensors, 2013
For sensors constructed by freestanding membranes, when the gap between a freestanding membrane and the substrate or between membranes is at micron scale, the effects of near-field radiative heat transfer on the sensors’ thermal performance should be ...

Mechanical Behavior and Microstructural Changes Associated with Tensile Deformation above the Martensite Start Temperature during Quenching and Subsequent Partitioning of a Low‐Alloy 37SiB6 Steel

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A new experimental setup, incorporating digital image correlation and infrared thermography in combination with inductive‐conductive heating for precise temperature control, is used to analyze the mechanical behavior and microstructural changes of sheet metal under complex thermomechanical test conditions that represent quench and partitioning ...

Advancing Wildfire‐Retardant Materials: Engineering Strategies for Direct and Indirect Suppression

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Here, the evolution, ecological impact, and performance of current fire‐retardant materials and suppression strategies are reviewed, offering an engineering perspective to address existing challenges and propose pathways for the development of more effective, scalable, and sustainable solutions to meet the demands of a changing climate. Wildfires cause

Collapse of massive magnetized dense cores using radiation-magneto-hydrodynamics: early fragmentation inhibition

open access: yes, 2011
We report the results of radiation-magneto-hydrodynamics calculations in the context of high mass star formation, using for the first time a self-consistent model for photon emission (i.e.
