Radio Echo Sounding: Brine Percolation Layer [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1973
AbstractAn abrupt change in radio echo sounding travel time was observed on the ice shelf near McMurdo station, Antarctica, and was mapped by a zig-zag traverse. This boundary corresponds to the horizontal extent of brine penetration into the edge of the ice shelf.

Radio echo sounding survey along the profile of the JARE-43 seismic exploration on the Mizuho Plateau, East Antarctica

open access: yesAntarctic Record, 2003
A seismic exploration was conducted in the austral summer of 2001-2002 by the 43rd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-43) on the Mizuho Plateau, East Antarctica.

Radiofrequency ice dielectric measurements at Summit Station, Greenland

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
We recently reported on the radio-frequency attenuation length of cold polar ice at Summit Station, Greenland, based on bi-static radar measurements of radio-frequency bedrock echo strengths taken during the summer of 2021.

Fifty-five years of Russian radio-echo sounding investigations in Antarctica

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2020
Russian (former Soviet) systematic studies of Antarctica by radio-echo sounding (RES) and ground-penetrating radar technique (GPR) were commenced in 1964.

Age estimates of isochronous reflection horizons by combining ice core, survey, and synthetic radar data. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Ice core records and ice-penetrating radar data contain complementary information on glacial subsurface structure and composition, providing various opportunities for interpreting past and present environmental conditions.

Radio Echo Sounding (RES) investigations at Talos Dome (East Antarctica): bedrock topography and ice thickness

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2003
Radio echo sounding measurements were collected during two Antarctic expeditions to determine the ice thickness and the sub-glacial morphology of Talos Dome in the region around 72°48'S; 159°06'E (about 6400 km2) on the edge of the East ...

AN AUTOMATIC EXTRACTION METHOD FOR ANTARCTIC SUBGLACIAL LAKE BASED ON RADIO ECHO SOUNDING DATA [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2021
Detection of subglacial lakes and interpretation their hydrological connectivity is of great importance to understanding the mass balance of Antarctic ice sheet.

Radio echo sounding data analysis of the Shackleton Ice Shelf

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2010
In this study, our initial results are presented for the interpretation of the radio echo sounding data collected over the Shackleton Ice Shelf and adjacent ice sheet (East Antarctica) during the 2003/2004 Australian-Italian expedition.

Radio-Echo Sounding: Glaciological Interpretations and Applications [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1975
AbstractAfter a brief review of factors relevant to the propagation of radio waves in ice, problems of profiling the upper and bedrock surfaces of ice sheets are considered. These include deconvolution of echo traces and accurate navigation. Results already available not only provide knowledge of sub-ice geomorphology, but also confirm our general ...
