Phase-Modulated Radio-over-Fiber Systems

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
We present an overview of phase-modulated RoF systems and review methods for downconversion based on phase-modulation. We describe a technique for phase-sensitive detection and demonstrate downconversion and I/Q channelization of a 64-QAM microwave signal.

Reconfigurable Radio-Over-Fiber Networks [Invited]

Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2015
This paper discusses the advantages of reconfigurable radio-over-fiber (RoF) networks and presents key activities in coherent remote access units, silicon photonics for microwave photonics, optical switching, and photonically reconfigurable antennas. These research areas enable functionalities that improve the utilization, flexibility, and performance ...

Radio Over Fiber for Picocellular Network Architectures

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2007
We have studied RF transmission over various multimode fibers (MMFs) and a standard single-mode fiber, targeting picocellular networks for voice, data, and video applications. Bandwidth requirements of MMF links that are based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) have been extensively studied.

5G radio over fiber for small-cells

2016 18th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2016
Demand for mobile networks with high capacity and increased data rates for the up-coming 5G scenarios will require a capillary presence of antennas and a tight coordination between macro-cells and small-cells. A new technique to distribute radio signals over fiber is presented.

Predistortion of Radio Over Fiber Links: Algorithms, Implementation, and Measurements

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers, 2012
Distributed antenna systems (DASs) have been proposed for use in high-data-rate wireless communications. Connecting the central unit to remote antenna units, radio over fiber (RoF) links become essential parts of the DAS. One of the major problems in the RoF links is the nonlinear distortion experienced in its optoelectronic devices.

Radio over fiber for mobile communications

2004 IEEE International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (IEEE Cat. No.04EX859), 2005
Radio over fiber is becoming an increasingly important technology for the in-building wireless market. The dynamic range requirements and optimum choice of laser are identified for this application. Furthermore, a novel architecture based on switched radio over fiber is proposed, which gives important benefits in terms of design, installation and ...

Architectures and Algorithms for Radio-Over-Fiber Networks

Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2018
To serve futuristic applications, wireless access with a wired-like connectivity is required. To accomplish this goal, we propose a design for a flexible radio-over-fiber (RoF) network, where we optimize the RoF network for the right choice of subcarrier modulation scheme.

Radio over fiber in multimedia access networks

Proceedings of the 1st international conference on Access networks - AcessNets '06, 2006
Dominant broadband access technologies today are Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) networks. DSL leads, with global subscribers exceeding 100 million, while cable-modem subscribers worldwide total 55 million in 2005 [1]. Recently, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) scenarios are also on the rise.

Analog radio-over-fiber solutions in support of 5G

2018 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM), 2018
We introduce Centralized (C-RAN) architectures combined with analog optical transport schemes to realize high-speed lanes between BBU pool and RRHs. The DSP-enabled architecture relies on the use of a powerful digital engine supporting data plane functions for both fiber-wireless parts.
