Microfabrication of Soft Millirobots Propelled by Low Voltage Electrohydraulic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Manual layer‐by‐layer assembly is replaced by wafer‐level MEMS batch fabrication for compliant polymer‐based electrohydraulic actuators. The microfabricated devices integrate sacrificially defined microcavities, Parylene‐C‐sealed inlets, and multilayer polymer–metal films.

A Case Study of Gas Impacted by Black-hole Jets with the JWST: Outflows, Bow Shocks, and High Excitation of the Gas in the Galaxy IC 5063

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present James Webb Space Telescope MIRI data of the inner ∼3 × 2 kpc ^2 of the galaxy IC 5063, in which the jets of a supermassive black hole interact with the gaseous disk they are crossing.

Strong Photoluminescence Enhancement in All‐Dielectric Ge Thin Film Metasurfaces for Integration on the Si Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Germanium (Ge) all‐dielectric metasurfaces can be leveraged to strongly enhance the radiative emission from Ge layers grown on silicon‐on‐insulator substrates by industry‐standard processes. At room‐temperature, the narrowband photoluminescence (PL) intensity is enhanced by a factor ∼40× with respect to unstructured films.

Electrohydrodynamically Driven Broadband and Color‐Shifting in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Ion‐driven electrohydrodynamic effects enable dynamic photonic bandgap modulation in cholesteric liquid crystals under low‐frequency AC driving. By regulating ion‐mediated disturbance of the helical structure, this approach produces two reversible optical responses: rapid color shifting across the visible spectrum and broadband reflection spanning the ...

Micromachined Double‐Membrane Mechanically Tunable Metamaterial for Thermal Infrared Filtering

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, Volume 6, Issue 5, May 2025.
Herein, a mechanically tunable double‐layer plasmonic metamaterial leveraging the extraordinary optical transmission effect observed in subwavelength arrays of openings within thin metal layers is presented. The concept is experimentally validated by integrating the proposed metamaterial structure into an electrostatic parallel‐plate actuator to create

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Impact of Radio-mode Feedback on the Covering Fraction of the Circumgalactic Medium of Quasars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Utilizing data from the Low-Frequency Array Two-meter Sky Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we assemble a sample of 1469 projected quasar pairs with detected radio emissions from foreground quasars, as well as a control sample of 5846 pairs ...

Driver behind the bimodal distribution of Eddington-scaled radio luminosity in nearby early-type galaxies

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Early-type galaxies host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, as indicated by radio emission spanning up to several orders of magnitude in terms of the physical scale, ranging from compact parsec-scale to extended kiloparsec-scale radio ...

Brightness and shape of radio jets

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1979
Observed radio structures of jets in radio galaxies are compared with models based on beam and slingshot theories. Simple beam models predict a rapid decline of surface brightness B with distance r from the nucleus, Bproportionalr/sup -m/, where m>3. This contrasts with the almost uniform brightness out to 200 kpc in the jet of NGC 6251 and out to 10 ...
