The use of linear feature detection to investigate thematic mapper data performance and processing [PDF]

open access: yes
The geometric and radiometric characteristics of thematic mapper data through analysis of linear features in the data are investigated. The particular aspects considered are: (1) thematic mapper ground IFOV; (2) radiometric contrast between linear ...

Hotspots on cold mountains: Hot flowers as pollinator refuges in mountain ecosystems

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Mountain environments constrain the activity of ectothermic insects. Yet, fine‐scale thermal refuges can buffer these thermal constraints, helping insects remain active in cold conditions.

The morphological affinities of the fossil cranium from Kabua, Kenya Affinités morphologiques du crâne fossile de Kabua (Kenya)

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Our current understanding of the origins of Homo sapiens is limited, in part, by the fragmented fossil record from Late Pleistocene and early Holocene Africa. Here, we re‐examine the Kabua 1 cranium, an enigmatic and little‐studied Kenyan fossil discovered in the 1950s. We compare virtual reconstructions created previously by our team with a wide range

Provenance Analysis Based on Cluster In‐Betweenness and Support Vector Machines: Identifying Migrant Candidates Using Multi‐Isotope Fingerprints

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Provenance reconstruction using strontium and lead stable isotopes can produce complex multidimensional fingerprints, challenging traditional methods. Identifying nonlocals, who migrated between sites, is a major task. Migrants are identifiable by divergent multi‐isotope fingerprints due to isotopic mixing between origin and destination sites.

Biometric Analysis of Giant and Large Murid Remains From Matja Kuru 2, Timor‐Leste

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Published research on Matja Kuru 2 (MK2) demonstrates its significance for understanding human lifestyle during the terminal Pleistocene and Holocene. Murids represent the most commonly identified taxa in the site, with specimens preliminarily classified as small, large and giant based on size comparisons.

A Multi‐Analytical Approach for the Compositional Characterization and Chronological Discrimination of Benin (Nigeria) Metal Sculptures

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents a multi‐analytical archaeometric approach for the compositional characterization and chronological discrimination of Benin metal sculptures in relation to the 1897 Punitive Expedition. The methodology integrates elemental composition (XRF and ICP), stable lead isotope ratios (MC‐ICP‐MS) for alloy system characterization ...

Application of Multi‐Method Dating for Understanding the Gravettian North of Moravia, Central Europe

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article presents the results of integrating three methods to assess the age of the Upper Palaeolithic site of Pietraszyn 11 (SW Poland), close to the Moravian Gate. Sediment chronology determined using optically stimulated luminescence produced promising, yet ambiguous results (51.0 ± 3.7 to 20.3 ± 0.7 ka).
