Correct radiosonde station elevation (balloon release height) is important in quality control of radiosonde soundings. AbstractOperational data assimilation systems for numerical weather prediction (NWP) neglect the space‐time drift of radiosonde balloons during their ascent. The validity of this assumption is assessed by reference to the equations of motion and a sensitivity experiment with a mesoscale NWP model.
