Background In 1994, NIRS launched carbon ion radiotherapy generated by the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). After clinical trials aiming at verification of efficacy and safety of this therapy, the radiotherapy was approved as "highly advanced medical technology (HAMT)" by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2003.

Abdominoperineal resection (APR) after minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery was associated with significantly higher rates of erectile and early ejaculatory dysfunction compared with anal‐sparing surgery.
