On the exhalation of radon from the Earth

Measurements were made, according to the method of Zupancic, of the rate at which the Earth exhales radon. A metal vessel was placed over a section of lawn near the Physics Building, Fordham University, and after a period of accumulation a sample of the gas was withdrawn from the vessel into an ionization‐chamber and measured for radon‐content.

The rate of exhalation of radon by persons with long-standing radium burdens increases about twofold shortly after a meal. The increase is short-lived and "normal" values are regained in 1.5 to 2 hours. The effect may account in part for the poor reproducibility in estimates of the freely emanating part of the radium content.

Radon Exhalation Rate from Various Building Materials

Solid-state alpha-track detectors using cellulose nitrate films were used to measure the radon exhalation rates from building materials. The radon flux emitted from the surface of the building material was measured by placing an inverted cup on the top of the building material. Cellulose nitrate film was placed within the cup.

Radon exhalation from granites used in Saudi Arabia

Measurements of radon exhalation for a total of 50 selected samples of construction materials used in Saudi Arabia were taken using a radon gas analyzer. These materials included sand, aggregate, cement, gypsum, hydrated lime, ceramics and granite. It was found that the granite samples were the main source of radon emanations.
