Studs: a squat-type defect in rails [PDF]
In the mid-2000s, a new rail defect that was initially classified as a squat became increasingly common on London Underground's track. By 2006, there were about 600 of these and they had become the Underground’s single most common rail defect. This defect occurred almost exclusively on lines carrying relatively new rolling stock. The work reported here

Rail-5k: a Real-World Dataset for Rail Surface Defects Detection
This paper presents the Rail-5k dataset for benchmarking the performance of visual algorithms in a real-world application scenario, namely the rail surface defects detection task. We collected over 5k high-quality images from railways across China, and annotated 1100 images with the help from railway experts to identify the most common 13 types of rail

Optical diagnostics of railway rail defects [PDF]
Abstract The safety of rail transport, including passenger traffic, largely depends on the timely diagnosis of the state of the rail infrastructure. To determine the state of metal structures, the method of acoustic emission (AE) is used.

Ensemble model for rail surface defects detection
The detection of rail surface defects is vital for high-speed rail maintenance and management. The CNN-based computer vision approach has been proved to be a strong detection tool widely used in various industrial scenarios. However, the CNN-based detection models are diverse from each other in performance, and most of them require sufficient training ...

The performance of rails in service is greatly influenced by the presence of metallurgical defects. Hydrogen-induced shatter crack is the most prominent among these and has been discussed in detail. Principal causes of rail failure have been outlined and different types of defects leading to failure of rails during service have been documented. Wear of

The effects of surface defects on the fatigue of water and oil lubricated contacts [PDF]
A study into effects of surface defects on the rolling contact fatigue of brass and rail steel has been undertaken on a twin-disc rolling-sliding test machine with both oil and water lubrication.

Railway wheel-flat and rail surface defect modelling and analysis by time–frequency techniques [PDF]
Damage to the surface of railway wheels and rails commonly occurs in most railways. If not detected, it can result in rapid deterioration and possible failure of rolling stock and infrastructure components causing higher maintenance costs.

Near field enhancements from angled surface defects : a comparison of scanning laser source and scanning laser detection techniques [PDF]
Enhancement of the Rayleigh wave signal amplitude at a surface defect, due to interference of incident, reflected and mode converted waves, has been reported by several authors, and it has been suggested that this could be used as a fingerprint of the ...

The Influence of Wheel/Rail Contact Conditions on the Microstructure and Hardness of Railway Wheels [PDF]
The susceptibility of railway wheels to wear and rolling contact fatigue damage is influenced by the properties of the wheel material (microstructure and hardness).
