Increasing the Reuse Potential of High‐Strength Steels by Extending the Fatigue Life through Surface Treatments

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Surface reconditioning through mechanical and electrochemical polishing is shown to extend the fatigue life of predamaged 42CrMo4 steel by over 12 times. By removing ≈100 μm of surface material, surface‐driven fatigue damage is mitigated. This study introduces a reuse potential metric to evaluate fatigue recovery and support sustainable steel reuse. The “We” and “Me” of Identity in Hazardous Industry Organizations: Face Work Tactics Among Practicing Engineers

open access: yesSymbolic Interaction, EarlyView.
In this paper, we use Goffman's notion of “face work” to examine how pipeline engineers perform and present their working selves as competent experts. Our analysis identifies various faces and face work tactics, including a focus on professional judgment, actively selling one's expertise relative to others, protective self‐deprecatory strategies, and ...

Review of Catenary Icing on High‐Speed Railways: Characteristics, Impact and Countermeasures

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The pantograph–catenary system (PCS) is the only path for electrified railway trains to acquire energy. Catenary icing during winter is a common natural phenomenon, which usually leads to the deterioration of the current quality and severely affects the operational safety of trains.

BEHIND THE FACES OF AESTHETICIZED URBANISM IN TUNXI, CHINA

open access: yesInternational Journal of Urban and Regional Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Urban policy in China has become increasingly predicated on securing an approved aesthetic that reflects ideological campaigns and political programmes. In highlighting the role of the aesthetic in Chinese urbanism, this article argues that the party‐state draws on an aesthetic palette that places the contemporary urban landscape in a ...

Research on the lightweight detection method of rail internal damage based on improved YOLOv8

open access: yesJournal of Engineering and Applied Science
To address the challenges of high computational costs, large storage demands, and low detection accuracy in internal rail damage identification, we propose a lightweight detection model, GhostMicroNet-YOLOv8n, as an enhancement of YOLOv8n.
