Lightweight Convolutional Neural Networks Model and Data Augmentation‐Based Background Regression for Rail Surface Defect Detection

open access: yesArtificial Intelligence for Engineering, EarlyView.
An ultra‐lightweight semantic segmentation network RailNet with only 0.905 M parameters is proposed for rail surface defect detection. Combined with a CDBM image enhancement and GAN‐based data augmentation, RailNet achieves superior segmentation accuracy and real‐time speed on edge devices.

An Overview of High‐Temperature Superconducting Cables in DC Systems: Unlocking Potential for High‐Voltage DC Networks

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper provides an overview of high‐temperature superconducting (HTS) cables in DC systems, with a focus on their deployment in high‐voltage DC (HVDC) networks. The assessment of HTS cable properties—such as extremely low electrical resistance, high current‐carrying capacity and a compact geometry—and their comparison with those of ...

Rail Robot for Rail Track Inspection

open access: yes, 2020
Railway transportation requires constant inspections and immediate maintenance to ensure public safety. Traditional manual inspections are not only time consuming, but also expensive. In addition, the accuracy of defect detection is also subjected to human expertise and efficiency at the time of inspection.

The Origins of the Human Rights Act: A ‘British Bill of Rights’ the First Time Around

open access: yesThe Political Quarterly, EarlyView.
Abstract This article reconstructs the first initiatives for a British Bill of Rights from the late 1960s to the mid‐1980s and argues that their failure shaped the eventual form of the Human Rights Act. Proposals for a Bill of Rights emerged across the political spectrum, but commanded most support on the right as a means of restraining trade unions ...

The First World War at Sea: Death, Commemoration and Cultural Remembrance

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite the ever‐increasing body of work devoted to war memorials, national days of remembrance and the commemoration of the First World War in Britain, academic focus remains firmly on the commemoration of the First World War on land. Yet, while the number of people who died at sea paled in comparison to their counterparts on the battlefield ...
