An investigation into the potential for multiple rail railguns [PDF]
A simple numerical technique for determining current distribution and inductance in parallel conductor geometries is outlined. Interim results of an ongoing study which applies this technique to analyze and compare two- and multirail railgun geometries are presented. Multirail candidates were compared to comparably sized two-rail counterparts.

Modelling rail thermal differentials due to bending and defects
Rail foot flaws have the potential to cause broken rails that can lead to derailment. This is not only an extremely costly issue for a rail operator in terms of damage to rolling stock, but has significant flow-on effects for network downtime and a safe ...

Evaluation of Rail Potential Based on Power Distribution in DC Traction Power Systems
Running rails used as a return conductor and ungrounded scheme have been widely adopted in DC traction power systems. Due to the longitudinal resistance of running rails and insulation resistance of rail-to-ground, there will be a potential rise between ...

Corrosion and stray currents at urban track infrastructure
Rails are a part of track structure where corrosion process inevitably occurs, except if they are fully insulated and devoid of contact with any other part of the structure (sleepers, fastening accessories) or electrolyte like moist soil or water in ...

Detection of Rail Defects Using NDT Methods
The rapid development of high-speed and heavy-haul railways caused rapid rail defects and sudden failure. This requires more advanced rail inspection, i.e., real-time accurate identification and evaluation for rail defects. However, existing applications
