Multi‐state unified calculation model of rail potential and stray current in DC railway systems

open access: yesIET Electrical Systems in Transportation, 2023
In order to calculate the dynamic distribution of rail potential and stray current accurately, a multi‐state unified calculation model of rail potential and stray current is proposed, and the characteristics of different protection devices and reflux ...

Evaluation of the potential improvements in freight rail transport: the case of a Swedish rail company [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on The Built Environment, 2014
Although rail transport is considered as energy efficient and environmental friendly mode of transport there are many hindrances towards increased use of rail for freight transport. The two main hindrances identified in Sweden are priority of passenger over freight rail transport and the fact that rail network has almost reached its capacity. Therefore

Medicaid as a Potential New Third Rail of US Politics

open access: yesJAMA Health Forum, 2022
This JAMA Forum discusses upcoming debt ceiling debates in the US Congress and potential cuts to entitlement programs within the context of the current wider reach of Medicaid than Medicare, Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, and the possible end to the COVID-19 public health emergency and a recession.

Study on a Heuristic Wheelset Structure without Rail Corrugation on Sharply Curved Tracks

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
Rail corrugation on low rails of sharp railway curves is still a difficult problem to solve worldwide. Nearly all low rails of the sharp railway curves incur rail corrugation. In the present study, an active method to remedy rail corrugation was studied.

Transition resistance influence of the upper structure track ballast on the rail-to-earth potential at AC railway sections

open access: yesВестник Научно-исследовательского института железнодорожного транспорта, 2022
Introduction. The purpose of the research is to evaluate transition resistance modifications of the upper structure track in passing from the ballast to the ballastless track. These modifications effect the rail-to-earth potential difference.

Potential for external reinforcement of insulated rail joints [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part F: Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit, 2016
This paper aims to investigate the alternative ways of reducing the deterioration and failure of insulated rail joints of railway tracks. Joints deteriorate faster than rails due to the presence of structural discontinuity. This weakness results in extra displacement due to the applied load and dynamic force that results as a consequence.

Impacts of Urban Rail Transit on On-Road Carbon Emissions: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2022
We examine the effects of urban rail transit on on-road carbon emissions in 90 Chinese cities, taking a structural equation modeling approach. Urban rail transit theoretically helps mitigate overall transport-sector emissions by absorbing part of the ...

Top-of-Rail Lubricants: Potential Risks and Benefits [PDF]

open access: yesi-RISE 2018, 2018
Top-of-rail (TOR) lubricants represent modern approach for friction modification between wheel and rail. The main goal of this study was to investigate potential risks and benefits associated with the application of these products, especially in terms of adhesion, wear, and noise. For this purpose, both laboratory and field experiments were carried out.

Uncovering the Real Potential for Air–Rail Substitution: An Exploratory Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
While air to rail substitution is much discussed, in the literature and in the policy debate, there has still been no attempt to quantify the potential for such mode substitution in order to examine the extent to which High Speed Train (HST) might address the main problems faced by the air transport industry: the capacity shortage on the one hand and ...
