Controlled Growth of Boron Nitride in Various Phases

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Phase‐selective boron nitride growth is presented as a unified materials‐design problem across hexagonal, rhombohedral, cubic, and amorphous phases. By linking synthesis routes to thermodynamic stability, kinetic accessibility, surface diffusion, interfacial templating, and energetic activation, this review clarifies how bonding and stacking are ...

3D Printed Photon Shield Assembly for Low‐Noise Visual Stimulation During Two‐Photon Imaging in Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We present the Photon Shield, an open‐hardware system for low‐noise two‐photon calcium imaging during visual stimulation in mice. Combining a 3D‐printed headplate and rail‐mounted shield substantially reduces stray‐light contamination, as quantitatively verified. Functional validation confirms reliable cortical responses. Open design files enable broad

Fatigue life evaluation of aged rails focusing on the state of hanging sleepers and rail-head surface irregularities that affect rail stress

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu
In this study, we focused on hanging sleepers and rail-head surface irregularities, which are considered to affect the fatigue life of aged rails, and statistically analyzed their occurrence on commercial lines.

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

Detection of Surface Defects on Railway Tracks Based on Deep Learning

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
The detection of rail surface defects is very important in railway transportation. However, the edge defects on both sides of the rail and the multi-scale variation between different types of defects both pose challenges to the detection of rail surface ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

3D‐Printing Aided Rapid Prototyping of Pretensioned Tensegrity Structures for Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Printing, injection molding, and assembly (PMA) is a method for rapid prototyping mesoscale, topologically complex, and tensioned tensegrity structures. In combination with PMA method, two mold design strategies: modular mold and compact channel layout, enable efficiency and scalability for tensegrity fabrication.
