Electromagnetic properties of railway ballast

NDT & E International, 2001
Abstract Laboratory experiments were undertaken to identify and characterise the dielectric properties of railway track ballast using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Better results were obtained with lower frequency antennas. Clear distinctions were obtained between wet and dry and clean and spent ballast.

Settlement Response of Fibre Reinforced Railway Ballast [PDF]

open access: possible, 2016
Ballasted track is the prevalent track form worldwide and with good design and maintenance can satisfy high performance demands including those of high speed lines. However, increasingly onerous loading is being placed on existing ballasted track networks in many parts of the world by more frequent, longer, faster and heavier trains.

Numerical simulations of the railway ballast

International Conference on Road and Rail Infrastructure, 2018
The numerical simulations are usually carried out in order to determine the characteristics of the loaded structure. Discrete element method (DEM) has several advantages in use for research of the granular material such as railway ballast. Several simplifications of the railway system in the numerical models affect the accuracy of the simulation ...

12. Railway track ballast

Geological Society, London, Engineering Geology Special Publications, 2001
Railway track formations generally consist essentially of a layer of coarse aggregate, or ballast, in which the sleepers are embedded (see Fig. 12.1). The ballast may rest directly on the subgrade or, depending on the bearing capacity, on a layer of blanketing sand. The layer of ballast is intended to provide a free draining base which is stable enough

Discrete element modelling of railway ballast

Granular Matter, 2005
The discrete element method has been used to simulate the behaviour of railway ballast under different test conditions. Single particle crushing tests have been simulated using agglomerates of bonded balls, and the distribution of strengths correctly follows the Weibull distribution, and the size effect on average strength is also consistent with that ...

Ballasted Track Superstructures: Performance of Innovative Railway Sleepers

Civil-Comp Proceedings, 2012
A railway sleeper is the structural element which transversally connects the two rails by means of fastening components, thus ensuring its gauge. Its additional function is to firmly secure the track to the ballast and to distribute the loads transferred from railway carriages to the ballast. One of the most important parameters in the characterization

Understanding and modelling drainage of railway ballast

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Transport, 2009
Railway track drainage has a significant effect on both the response of a rail to loading and the durability of the ballast and sub-ballast. Although various standards and design methods exist for the surface drainage there is limited information on sub-surface drainage.

Modelling and experiment of railway ballast vibrations

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2004
The vibration of railway ballast is a key factor to cause track geometry change and increase of track maintenance costs. So far the methods for analyzing and testing the vibration of the granular ballast have not been well formed. In this paper, a five-parameter model for analysis of the ballast vibration is established based upon the hypothesis that ...
