Coexistent Pseudogout and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare Septic Arthritis in a Patient with HIV and ESRD

open access: yesCase Reports in Rheumatology, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
Pseudogout is a crystal‐induced arthropathy characterized by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals in synovial fluid, menisci, or articular cartilage. Although not very common, this entity can be seen in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Pharmacokinetics of dolutegravir when administered with mineral supplements in healthy adult subjects

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 55, Issue 5, Page 490-496, May 2015., 2015
Abstract All commercially available integrase inhibitors are 2‐metal binders and may be affected by co‐administration with metal cations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of calcium and iron supplements on dolutegravir pharmacokinetics and strategies (dose separation and food) to attenuate the effects if significant reductions in ...

Evidence for the formation of a Mott state in potassium-intercalated pentacene [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B. 79, 125116 (2009), 2008
We investigate electronic transport through pentacene thin-films intercalated with potassium. From temperature-dependent conductivity measurements we find that potassium-intercalated pentacene shows metallic behavior in a broad range of potassium concentrations.

Drug–drug interactions between gender‐affirming hormone therapy and antiretrovirals for treatment/prevention of HIV

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 90, Issue 10, Page 2366-2382, October 2024.
Transgender persons face a greater burden of HIV compared to cisgender counterparts. Concerns around drug–drug interactions (DDIs) have been cited as reasons for lower engagement in HIV care and lower pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among transgender populations.

How much of the past matters? Using dynamic survival models for the monitoring of potassium in heart failure patients using electronic health records [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Statistical methods to study the association between a longitudinal biomarker and the risk of death are very relevant for the long-term care of subjects affected by chronic illnesses, such as potassium in heart failure patients. Particularly in the presence of comorbidities or pharmacological treatments, sudden crises can cause potassium to undergo ...

Nutritional Supplementation with the Mushroom Agaricus sylvaticus Reduces Oxidative Stress in Children with HIV

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology, Volume 25, Issue 5, Page 257-264, 2014., 2014
BACKGROUND: The involvement of free radicals and oxidative stress in HIV infection has been extensively studied, and the benefits of antioxidant supplementation in animal studies have been demonstrated. However, few studies have demonstrated a benefit in clinical studies.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation, Zeeman and hyperfine relaxation of potassium atoms in a paraffin-coated cell [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Nonlinear magneto-optical Faraday rotation (NMOR) on the potassium D1 and D2 lines was used to study Zeeman relaxation rates in an antirelaxation paraffin-coated 3-cm diameter potassium vapor cell. Intrinsic Zeeman relaxation rates of $\gamma^{NMOR}/2\pi=2.0(6) {\rm Hz}$ were observed.

Scattering strength of potassium on a carbon nanotube with known chirality [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 94, 045408 (2016), 2015
We have measured the scattering strength of charged impurities on a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube with known chirality. The resistivity of the nanotube is measured as a function of the density of adsorbed potassium atoms, enabling the determination of the resistance added by an individual potassium atom. Holes are scattered 37 times more

Iatrogenic Cushing Syndrome Secondary to Ritonavir‐Epidural Triamcinolone Interaction: An Illustrative Case and Review

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Perspectives on Infectious Diseases, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
HIV positive patients on ritonavir‐containing antiretroviral therapy (ART) can develop iatrogenic Cushing syndrome (IACS) and adrenal insufficiency as a result of drug‐drug interactions with inhaled or intranasal glucocorticoid therapy. Reports related to epidural triamcinolone injections are relatively uncommon but increasingly reported. We describe a

Potassium intercalation in graphite: A van der Waals density-functional study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Potassium intercalation in graphite is investigated by first-principles theory. The bonding in the potassium-graphite compound is reasonably well accounted for by traditional semilocal density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, to investigate the intercalate formation energy from pure potassium atoms and graphite requires use of a ...
