Hearing in reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus )

Journal of Comparative Physiology A: Neuroethology, Sensory, Neural, and Behavioral Physiology, 2001
The audiogram of two yearling male reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were determined using a conditioned suppression/avoidance procedure. During testing, the animal was drinking from a metal bowl while pure tone signals were played at random intervals and followed by an electric shock in the bowl. By breaking contact with the bowl at sound signals,

Dental Anomalies in Caribou, Rangifer tarandus

Journal of Mammalogy, 1971
The dentitions of 43 of 1226 caribou (Rangifer tarandus) skulls examined had anomalies. Of the 43, 13 had supernumerary teeth, 25 had missing teeth, and five had extreme variations in root development and abnormal dentary patterns. These anomalies appear to be genetically produced and further study from the standpoint of evolutionary origin might be ...

Variation in gestation length among captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)

Theriogenology, 2009
An estimated 90% of reindeer females are mated in a 10- to 21-d interval and give birth in an equally synchronized manner. Reported gestation length in reindeer is highly variable (range, 203 to 240 d), almost twice the reindeer estrous cycle length. Previously, we identified a significant, negative relationship between gestation length and conception ...

Pestivirus and alphaherpesvirus infections in Swedish reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.)

Veterinary Microbiology, 2012
Herding semi-domesticated reindeer has economic and social value for Sami people in the northern territories of Fennoscandia. However, with the intensification of reindeer husbandry, interspecies transmission of pathogens between reindeer and domestic animals may become a problem, especially for countries such as Sweden, Norway, and Finland where ...

Transplacental toxoplasmosis in a reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) fetus

Veterinary Parasitology, 2002
Toxoplasma gondii infection was diagnosed in a full term stillborn reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) fetus. The fetus had encephalitis and placentitis associated with T. gondii. Tissue cysts were identified histologically in sections of brain and tachyzoites were present in placenta and the myocardium.

Defining the anatomy of the Rangifer tarandus sex chromosomes

Chromosoma, 1998
A comprehensive cytogenetic characterization of the unusally large reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) sex chromosomes is presented for the purpose of studying the evolution of these atypical gonosomes. Sex chromosome idiograms were constructed from G-banded and C-banded chromosomes to illustrate the relative amounts and locations of euchromatin and ...

Some aspects of thermoregulation in newborn reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)

Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1985
At birth reindeer calves often are exposed to sub‐zero ambient temperatures (Ta) sometimes even combined with wind and precipitation. The resting metabolism was measured in three different age groups (1, 7 and 14 days old) at Ta's of –20, –5, 10 and 20oC.
