Rainforest litter invertebrates decimated by high severity burns during Australia's gigafires

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 48, Issue 7, Page 1328-1343, November 2023., 2023
We investigated the impacts of the 2019–2020 bushfires on litter macroinvertebrates of south‐east Australian rainforests. High severity burns supported only 26% of the abundance in unburnt sites, while medium severity burns supported 80%. Across the study region, we estimate that 60 billion litter macroinvertebrates were lost from temperate rainforests

Anthelmintic Agents from African Medicinal Plants: Review and Prospects

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Soil‐transmitted helminthiasis affects more than 1.5 billion people globally and largely remains a sanitary problem in Africa. These infections place a huge economic burden on poor countries and affect livestock production, causing substantial economic losses and poor animal health. The emergence of anthelmintic resistance, especially in livestock, and

Host evolutionary relationships explain tree mortality caused by a generalist pest–pathogen complex

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 14, Issue 4, Page 1083-1094, April 2021., 2021
Abstract The phylogenetic signal of transmissibility (competence) and attack severity among hosts of generalist pests is poorly understood. In this study, we examined the phylogenetic effects on hosts differentially affected by an emergent generalist beetle–pathogen complex in California and South Africa. Host types (non‐competent, competent and killed‐

The Effects of Landscape Change on Plant Diversity and Structure in the Bale Mountains National Park, Southeastern Ethiopia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Bale Mountains National Park is one of the protected areas in Ethiopia that holds the largest area of Afroalpine habitat in Africa and the second largest stand of moist tropical forest. Nevertheless, human settlements, overgrazing, and recurrent fire are the main problems in the park. This study aimed to determine the effects of human‐induced landscape

High Inter-Specific Diversity and Seasonality of Trunk Radial Growth in Trees Along an Afrotropical Elevational Gradient. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Cell Environ
ABSTRACT Understanding mechanisms driving tropical tree growth is essential for comprehending carbon sequestration and predicting the future of tropical forests amid rapid deforestation. We conducted a natural experiment in Mount Cameroon to identify climatic factors limiting diurnal and seasonal growth in dominant tree species across a 2200‐m ...

Genetic diversity of populations of the dioecious Myrsine coriacea (Primulaceae) in the Atlantic Forest

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2018
Although a species’ sexual system may influence the genetic diversity of its populations in their natural environment, there have been few such studies involving indigenous species of the Atlantic Forest.

RADseq resolves the phylogeny of Hawaiian Myrsine (Primulaceae) and provides evidence for hybridization

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, Volume 58, Issue 6, Page 823-840, November 2020., 2020
The Hawaiian radiation of Myrsine (Primulaceae) is the only one among the ten most species‐rich Hawaiian plant lineages that has never been included in a phylogenetic analysis. Based on RADseq we resolved the relationships of Hawaiian Myrsine with high support. Quartet Sampling and HyDe analyses reveal phylogenetic incongruence throughout the phylogeny

Analysis of Land Cover Changes in Afromontane Vegetation of Image Forest Reserve, Southern Highlands of Tanzania

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
An analysis of land cover changes (LCCs) was done in Image Forest Reserve (IFR) from August to October 2019. Free satellite images for 1990, 2004, and 2018 were downloaded from Landsat 5 (TM) and Landsat 8 (OLI) available through the USGS portal. Ground surveys were conducted using systematically set plots of 20 m × 40 m to identify the existing land ...

Cyanogenic glycosides in plants

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2000
The presence of cyanogenic glycosides was determined in 70 plant species from the campus of the State University of Londrina, PR, Brazil, and a further 45 plant species from the Forestry Reserve on the Doralice Farm in Ibiporã, PR, Brazil.

Parâmetros fitossociológicos de um cerrado no Parque Nacional Da Serra Do Cipó, MG Phytosociological parameters of a cerrado in "Serra Do Cipó" national park, Minas Gerais, Brazil
