Intensity fluctuations in Hurricane Irma (2017) during a period of rapid intensification [PDF]
Abstract. This study aims to understand the fluctuations observed in Hurricane Irma (2017), which change the tangential wind speed and the size of the radius of maximum surface wind and therefore affect short-term destructive potential. Intensity fluctuations observed during a period of rapid intensification of Hurricane Irma between 4 and 6 September ...

The impact of malaria control on infant mortality in Kenya [PDF]
Since the early 2000s there has been a rapid intensification of malaria control efforts across Africa. I exploit baseline differences in the regional incidence of malaria coupled with the sharp timing of the intensified campaign to investigate the ...

Does monsoon gyre always favour tropical cyclone rapid intensification? [PDF]
AbstractIn this study, potential impacts of monsoon gyres (MG) on the development of a tropical cyclone (TC) are investigated using idealized numerical simulations. When a TC is embedded in an MG, our results show that its development is slower, and its intensity is weaker compared with that evolved with no background flow.

Rapid Intensification of Typhoon Hato (2017) over Shallow Water [PDF]
On 23 August, 2017, Typhoon Hato rapidly intensified by 10 kt within 3 h just prior to landfall in the city of Macau along the South China coast. Hato’s surface winds in excess of 50 m s−1 devastated the city, causing unprecedented damage and social impact. This study reveals that anomalously warm ocean conditions in the nearshore shallow water (depth &

Vertical Vortex Development in Hurricane Michael (2018) during Rapid Intensification [PDF]
Abstract The landfall of Hurricane Michael (2018) at category-5 intensity occurred after rapid intensification (RI) spanning much of the storm’s lifetime. Four Hurricane Hunter aircraft missions observed the RI period with tail Doppler radar (TDR). Data from each of the 14 aircraft passes through the storm were quality controlled via a combination of ...
