Color Variability Constrains Detection of Geometrically Perfect Mirror Symmetry
Symmetry in nature is a result of biological self-organization, driven by evolutionary processes. Detected by the visual systems of various species, from invertebrates to primates, symmetry determines survival relevant choice behaviors and supports ...

Temporal patterns of genetic variation in a salmon population undergoing rapid change in migration timing [PDF]
AbstractThough genetic diversity is necessary for population persistence in rapidly changing environments, little is known about how climate‐warming influences patterns of intra‐population genetic variation. For a pink salmon population experiencing increasing temperatures, we used temporal genetic data (microsatellite = 1993, 2001, 2009; allozyme ...

Rapid time variations and radiative instabilities of astrophysical masers
The time-varying intensities are obtained for astrophysical masers that are radiatively unstable. Numerical integrations of the time-dependent, nonlinear equations of radiative transfer are performed with the usual approximation of a linear maser.

Time Diversity Passive Time Reversal for Underwater Acoustic Communications
Underwater acoustic signal propagation is greatly affected by source-receiver motion, surface variations, and water column variabilities, which make the underwater acoustic communications very challenging.

Rapid and reliable detection of α-globin copy number variations by quantitative real-time PCR [PDF]
Abstract Background Alpha-thalassemia is the most common human genetic disease worldwide. Copy number variations in the form of deletions of α-globin genes lead to α-thalassemia while duplications of α-globin genes can cause a severe phenotype in β-thalassemia carriers due to accentuation of globin chain imbalance. It

Characteristics of variations in the ground magnetic field during substorms at mid latitudes [PDF]
Substorms are known to cause geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) in power transmission lines through variations in the ground magnetic field. An improved knowledge and understanding of how the different phases of substorms affect the ground magnetic ...

Time‐of‐night variations in the story‐like organization of dream experience developed during rapid eye movement sleep [PDF]
SummaryThis study aimed to investigate the cycles (2nd/4th) and duration‐related (5/10 min) variations in the story‐like organization of dream experience elaborated during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Dream reports were analysed using story grammar rules.

Short-term variability in Greenland Ice Sheet motion forced by time-varying meltwater inputs: implications for the relationship between subglacial drainage system behavior and ice velocity. [PDF]
High resolution measurements of ice motion along a 120 km transect in a land-terminating section of the GrIS reveal short-term velocity variations (<1 day), which are forced by rapid variations in meltwater input to the subglacial drainage system from
