Liquid Crystalline Elastomers in Soft Robotics: Assessing Promise and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are programmable soft materials that undergo large, anisotropic deformation in response to external stimuli. Their molecular alignment encodes directional actuation in a monolithic structure, making them long‐standing candidates for soft robotic systems.

Rare Earth Compounds. I. Rare Earth Polysulfides

Inorganic Chemistry, 1964
The polysulfides of Tb, Ho, and Er were prepared for the first time. New information was obtained for a number of rare earth polysulfides. A larger phase region with a more complex crystal structure was found to exist. Sulfur to metal atom ratios of 1.7 to 2.0 were found for the lightest rare earths and 1.7 to 1.8 for the heavier rare earths.

Heavy rare earth free, free rare earth and rare earth free magnets - Vision and reality

Scripta Materialia, 2018
It is commonly understood that among the intermetallic phases used for permanent magnets, practically none can fully realize its potential based on the intrinsic magnetic properties. We discuss different reasons leading to this limitation, known as the Brown paradox, and discuss some possible ways of overcoming it.
