Rarefied gas dynamics on a planetary scale
Physics of Fluids, 2011Large scale rarefied gas dynamic effects are found in the tenuous atmospheres of several planets and satellites in our Solar System. These phenomena range from thickened shock structures in supersonic flows, to strong thermal nonequilibrium in a stratified atmosphere, to thermal and velocity slip at the body surface.

Benchmark problems in rarefied gas dynamics
Vacuum, 2012Abstract In order to identify the most efficient and reliable methods and solvers for modeling of rarefied gas flows, it is proposed to choose few benchmark problems to be solved by different methods. The main requirements to such problems, such as geometrical simplicity and small number of determining parameters, are formulated in the present work ...

Journal of the Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1969
Rarefied gas dynamics is concerned with flows at such low density that the molecular mean free path is not negligible. Under these conditions, the gas no longer behaves as a continuum. Important modifications in aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics occur which are ascribable to the basic molecular structure of the gas.

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1989
The current state of those aspects of rarefied gas dynamics research that appear to be most important to research planned over the next decade is evaluated. These aspects encompass assessments of computational rarefied-gas dynamics (CRGD) that will allows their use as surrogates for experiments, the development of hybris-flowfield computational ...

Numerical investigations in rarefied gas dynamics
USSR Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, 1980Abstract A SURVEY, compiled in the Laboratory of the Theory of Transport Processes of the Computing Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, of papers on numerical methods of solving the kinetic equations for a neural gas is presented. THe main aspects of 15 years of the scientific activity of a small research group are briefly elucidated.

Dispersion Relations in Rarefied Gas Dynamics
The Physics of Fluids, 1963The one-dimensional initial-value problem of a monatomic single component gas is considered. Using the linearized Boltzmann equation the dispersion relation is studied. In addition to the usual gas-dynamic sound waves, one finds an infinity of decaying propagating waves. The phenomenon exhibits itself as a sequence of epochs, the last state of which is

Numerical Methods for Rarefied Gas Dynamics
1995Numerical methods for solving the gas dynamic Boltzmann equation are of key importance because in general analytic solutions can not be found. Only in special cases such as in the fluid dynamic or free molecular flow limits for specific geometries and boundary conditions are analytic solutions (or approximate solutions) known [15].

RESEARCH ON RAREFIED GAS DYNAMICS AND PLASMA DYNAMICS
1962Abstract : Research activities in the field of rarefied gasdynamics during the period September 1960 to August 1962 are reported in summary. Most of these constitute continuation of work reported previously, particularly in the experimental studies of rarefied gasdynamics and the attendant development of equipment experimental tools.
