Pinealectomy in Rats

2022
The pinealectomy technique consists of the surgical removal of the superficial pineal gland. This procedure allows the ablation of circulating indoles produced by this gland. Withdrawal of systemic melatonin, a pineal hormone, affects animal circadian rhythms and induces several physiological changes that are the subject of many investigations. In this

Condylectomy in the rat

Archives of Oral Biology, 1965
Abstract To assess the contribution of the condyle to the growth of the mandible, forty-two Holtzman albino rats weighing between 40–50 g, were bilaterally condylectomized and at maturity compared anatomically and radiographicalry with 10 shamoperated and 27 control animals. From standardized lateral radiographs, the incisor overjet and molar overjet

Megacolon in Rats

Digestion, 2009
Four months of sigmoid colon intrinsic denervation of young male Wistar rats resulted in typical megacolon. Average 46.0% denervation of the Auerbach plexus was obtained by serosal application of benzalkonium chloride (0.2% v/v). Denervation was assessed by ganglion cell counts in a 480-nm extension of the treated segment.

Prostatitis in the Rat

Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology, 1979
A high incidence of spontaneous, non-acute, age-dependent prostatitis was observed in the lateral prostate of Copenhagen rats and Wistar rats. The lumen of infected acini was filled with polymorphonuclear leucocytes, shed epithelial cells and cell residues. Epithelial cells lining such acini showed degenerative changes. Lymphocytes and macrophages were

Rat-Rat Hybridoma Formation and Rat Monoclonal Antibodies

1987
The first model of monoclonal antibody-secreting hybridomas, developed by Kohler and Milstein (1), was a mouse system. It can be considered eminently successful, most likely because of its efficiency and extreme stability. If it is so successful, why develop another rodent model? There are, at least, three main reasons.

Electroretinography in rats

Agents and Actions, 1988
Basic mechanisms of the rat ERG were reinvestigated with contemporary methods of recording and photic stimulation via an optic fiber system connected with a contact lens. Flash stimulation and background illuminance were performed with photometrically defined light stimuli.

Dull Rats and Bright Rats

1996
One of the most important effects to control against in psychological experimentation is the effect of experimenter bias. Experimenters can all too easily find what they are looking for (support for their own hypotheses) by inadvertently influencing the way in which their subjects behave.

Mating of Rats

2003
For the production of transgenic rats, matings are carried out under controlled conditions in order to obtain a supply of one-cell fertilized eggs, and to obtain pseudopregnancy in females, which will act as surrogate mothers for the microinjected eggs.
