On the modeling of large ratcheting strains with large time increments

Engineering Computations, 2007
Purpose This paper aims to speed up finite element analyses of structures with a highly nonlinear material response subjected to many loading cycles. Design/methodology/approach An approach where large time increments are taken in an adaptive ...

Ratchetting Strains in Cyclic Plastic Bending

1991
The incremental downward collapse of cantilevers subjected to cyclic horizontal deflections and a steady sustained vertical load is examined. The material behaviour of elemental fibres in the beams, undergoing push-pull cycles, is modelled using an appropriate power law.

Ratchetting strain as a driving force for fatigue crack growth

International Journal of Fatigue, 2013
Abstract Ratchetting deformation has significant implications on material damage and fatigue life of components under service loading conditions. In this work, we explore the concept of ratchetting strain as a driving force in controlling crack growth, both time-independent and time-dependent, utilising elasto-plastic, visco-plastic and crystal ...

Upper Bounds for Accumulated Strains Due to Creep Ratcheting

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 1974
A rigorous method of bounding both the total accumulated strain and the strain ranges due to cyclic operation in the creep regime is presented. These limits can be obtained from the results of purely elastic stress analyses. The basic problem of a cylindrical vessel under internal pressure subjected to cyclic thermal stresses is solved in detail.

Limited Versus Unlimited Strain Accumulation Due to Ratcheting Mechanisms

Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2019
After distinguishing material ratcheting and structural ratcheting, different phenomena related to structural ratcheting are gathered. Ratcheting of elastic–plastic structures observed with stationary position of loads is distinguished from ratcheting with moving loads. Both categories are illustrated by examples.

Ratchetting Under Cyclic Axial Strain with Torsional Stress

1973
In order to investigate the fundamental behavior of thermal stress ratchetting, strain controlled push-pull low-cycle fatigue tests with steady torsional stress were conducted on ASTM A302-B steel, AISI 304 steel, and JIS SCM 3 steel under constant elevated and cyclic temperatures.

Measurement of Thermal Ratcheting Strain on the Structures by the Laser Speckle Method

Volume 3: Design and Analysis, 2006
Prevention of thermal ratcheting is an important problem for high temperature components of fast breeder reactors that are subjected to cyclic thermal loads. To clarify ratcheting behaviors, structural model tests were planned. Strain measurement is important for understanding the thermal ratcheting phenomenon The conventional measurement by strain ...

Parameter identification and modeling of large ratcheting strains in carbon steel

Computers & Structures, 2006
In this paper the parameter identification procedure of a material model for large multi-axial ratcheting strains, as proposed in [Johansson G, Ekh M, Runesson K. Computational modelling of inelastic large ratcheting strains. Int J Plast 2005;20:955-80], is demonstrated.

Kinematic hardening analysis of ratchet strain in the “pulley test”

International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, 1984
Abstract The classical Bree problem—which represents an uniaxial model of a thin tube subjected to combined internal pressure and cyclic thermal stress across its wall—can be simulated by means of the pulley test in which a wire or strip specimen is subjected to combined steady tensile stress and cyclic bending stress.
