Rate-independent Computation in Continuous Chemical Reaction Networks
Understanding the algorithmic behaviors that are in principle realizable in a chemical system is necessary for a rigorous understanding of the design principles of biological regulatory networks. Further, advances in synthetic biology herald the time when we will be able to rationally engineer complex chemical ...

Rate Dependence and Role of Disorder in Linearly Sheared Two-Dimensional Foams
The shear flow of two dimensional foams is probed as a function of shear rate and disorder. Disordered foams exhibit strongly rate dependent velocity profiles, whereas ordered foams show rate independence.

Logarithmic rate dependence in deforming granular materials
Rate-independence for stresses within a granular material is a basic tenet of many models for slow dense granular flows. By contrast, logarithmic rate dependence of stresses is found in solid-on-solid friction, in geological settings, and elsewhere.

An FPGA-based infant monitoring system [PDF]
We have designed an automated visual surveillance system for monitoring sleeping infants. The low-level image processing is implemented on an embedded Xilinx’s Virtex II XC2v6000 FPGA and quantifies the level of scene activity using a specially ...

YORP torques with 1D thermal model
A numerical model of the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect for objects defined in terms of a triangular mesh is described. The algorithm requires that each surface triangle can be handled independently, which implies the use of a 1D ...

Communication and Language Profiles of Children Treated for Posterior Fossa Brain Tumors
ABSTRACT Background Cognitive and language deficits are frequently reported sequelae of posterior fossa brain tumors (PFBT). Typically, delayed onset impedes prompt assessment and early intervention. This has devastating implications for quality of life.

Central bank independence and inflation performance: panacea or placebo?
A great deal of recent attention has been devoted towards the relationship between central bank independence and economic performance. The degree of central bank independence is said to determine cross-country inflation differences.
