Checks and balances, private information, and the credibility of monetary commitments [PDF]

open access: yes
The authors develop and test several new hypotheses about the anti-inflationary effect of central bank independence and exchange rate pegs in the context of different institutions and different degrees of citizen information about government policies ...

Plastic Slip Patterns through Rate-Independent and Rate-Dependent Plasticity

open access: yesKey Engineering Materials, 2014
Plastic deformation induces various types of dislocation microstructures at different length scales, which eventually results in a heterogeneous deformation field in metallic materials. Development of such structures manifests themselves as macroscopic hardening/softening response and plastic anisotropy during strain path changes, which is often ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Measures for enhancing auditor independence: Perceptions of spanish non-professional investors and auditors

open access: yesEuropean Research on Management and Business Economics
Auditors fulfill a crucial societal role by increasing the credibility of financial reports, which requires that appropriate audit quality be provided and auditors are factually independent and perceived as such.

The Euro bloc, the Dollar bloc and the Yen bloc: how much monetary policy independence can exchange rate flexibility buy in an interdependent world? [PDF]

open access: yes
The paper analyses the trade-off between exchange rate flexibility and monetary policy autonomy. It tests empirically the 'Possible Duality' hypothesis, i.e.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Central Bank Independence and inflation: the case of Greece [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper discusses the argument for Central Bank Independence (CBI) in the case of Greece. Using a time series approach and the last data available before Greece joined the EMU , the hypothesis that Central Bank Independence is important for ...

Logarithmic rate dependence in deforming granular materials

open access: yes, 2002
Rate-independence for stresses within a granular material is a basic tenet of many models for slow dense granular flows. By contrast, logarithmic rate dependence of stresses is found in solid-on-solid friction, in geological settings, and elsewhere.

A variational characterization of rate‐independent evolution [PDF]

open access: yesMathematische Nachrichten, 2009
AbstractRate‐independent evolution driven by non‐convex potentials is by nature non‐smooth and some weak solvability notions have been recently advanced. This note is intended to contribute to this discussion by proposing a variational characterization of rate‐independent evolution based on a variational principle and a maximal dissipation criterion ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
