It’s time for rational rationing [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of General Practice, 2013
> ‘Ask me my three main priorities for the NHS, and I tell you: efficiency, efficiency, efficiency.’ No government minister said this, at least not yet. Of course, the government wants quality too, but its war is on spending, and efficiency is its weapon. NHS spending power is set to remain stable at best for the foreseeable future.

Cool Kitchen: Processing Starch and Eggshell Powder into Sustainable Coatings for Passive Daytime Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A food‐grade cooling composite made from starch and recycled eggshell powder offers a scalable, ultra‐low‐cost solution for passive daytime radiative cooling. Easily prepared using basic kitchen tools, this material empowers communities, even in areas with limited infrastructure, to stay cooler during worsening summer heat waves.

Stranded Capital in Fisheries: The Pacific Coast Groundfish/Whiting Case [PDF]

open access: yes
Current rationalization options for West Coast groundfish trawl fisheries include significant allocations of harvester quota to processors, justified as compensation for “stranded capital.†This article discusses the origin of the concept of stranded ...

Peptide Sequencing With Single Acid Resolution Using a Sub‐Nanometer Diameter Pore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To sequence a single molecule of Aβ1−42–sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the aggregate is forced through a sub‐nanopore 0.4 nm in diameter spanning a 4.0 nm thick membrane. The figure is a visual molecular dynamics (VMD) snapshot depicting the translocation of Aβ1−42–SDS through the pore; only the peptide, the SDS, the Na+ (yellow/green) and Cl− (cyan ...

A Rationalization of the Weak Axiom of Revealed Preference

open access: yes, 2020
We offer a rationalization of the weak axiom of revealed preference (WARP) and of the weak generalized axiom of revealed preference (WGARP) for both finite and infinite data sets of consumer choice.

Spatially Resolved Click Patterning of Dyes on Graphene for 2D Hybrids with Regiotunable Fluorescence

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Well‐structured graphene hybrid architectures featuring spatially resolved fluorescent properties represent a promising but so‐far elusive synthetic target. A robust and straightforward method for fabricating well‐organized graphene‐dye hybrid nanoassemblies through a combination of reductive patterning and conventional click chemistry is presented ...

Are rational expectations really rational? [PDF]

open access: yesEconomics Letters, 1992
Abstract This article investigates whether ‘rational expectations’ are really rational, i.e. whether they maximize agents' utilities in some way. For that purpose we construct a model where each agent may have a whole array of expectations schemes, including the rational expectations one.

Grain Boundary Space Charge Engineering of Solid Oxide Electrolytes: Model Thin Film Study

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates unprecedented control of grain boundary electrical properties in solid electrolytes. Selective diffusion of cations through grain boundaries in thin films enables 12 orders of magnitude variation in ionic resistance, proving that systematic chemical modification of grain boundary electrical properties is feasible.
