Effects of Increased Distal Limb Mass on Stability During Arboreal Locomotion in the Laboratory Rat (Rattus norvegicus). [PDF]

open access: yesJ Morphol
We placed small weighted bracelets on the wrist and ankle joints of laboratory rats to test the effects of limb mass on stability during locomotion. We found that adding mass to the distal parts of limbs does not, on its own, augment stability during quadrupedal locomotion.

Rapid eye movement sleep deprivation induced gene regulation for modulation of noradrenaline level in brain regions of rats: Implications with chronic sleep-loss associated pathophysiological conditions. [PDF]

open access: yesNeuroprotection
Proposed mechanism for transcriptional regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine β hydroxylase (DBH) and monoamine oxidase‐A (MAO‐A) genes during rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) or its loss. Increased histone acetylation and decreased histone methylation of TH and DBH gene favor chromatin opening, increase in gene expressions, increased enzyme ...

Genetic control of differential acetylation in diabetic rats.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Post-translational protein modifications such as acetylation have significant regulatory roles in metabolic processes, but their relationship to both variation in gene expression and DNA sequence is unclear. We address this question in the Goto-Kakizaki (

Transcriptome Profiling in Rat Inbred Strains and Experimental Cross Reveals Discrepant Genetic Architecture of Genome-Wide Gene Expression

open access: yesG3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics, 2016
To test the impact of genetic heterogeneity on cis- and trans-mediated mechanisms of gene expression regulation, we profiled the transcriptome of adipose tissue in 20 inbred congenic strains derived from diabetic Goto–Kakizaki (GK) rats and Brown–Norway (

Nest-building behaviour in male rats from three inbred strains: BN/HsdCpb, BDIX/Or1Ico and LEW/Mol

open access: yesAnimal Welfare, 2005
AbstractThree inbred strains of male laboratory rat (BN/HsdCpb, BDIX/Or1Ico and LEW/Mol) were provided with nest boxes and nest materials, and were observed for nest-building activity. After 7 days, each cage and nest box was examined. Each nest was weighed and scored for complexity, and returned to the cage.

Genetic background specific hypoxia resistance in rat is correlated with balanced activation of a cross-chromosomal genetic network centering on physiological homeostasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2012
Genetic background of an individual can drastically influence an organism’s response upon environmental stress and pathological stimulus. Previous studies in inbred rats showed that compared to Brown Norway (BN), Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rat exerts ...

Nociception and conditioned fear in rats: strains matter.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
When using rats in pain research, strain-related differences in outcomes of tests for pain and nociception are acknowledged. However, very little is known about the specific characteristics of these strain differences. In this study four phylogenetically

Rat Strain Ontology: structured controlled vocabulary designed to facilitate access to strain data at RGD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
BACKGROUND: The Rat Genome Database (RGD) ( http://rgd.mcw.edu/) is the premier site for comprehensive data on the different strains of the laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus).

Ribonuclease (RNase) Prolongs Survival of Grafts in Experimental Heart Transplantation

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2016
BackgroundCell damage, tissue and vascular injury are associated with the exposure and release of intracellular components such as RNA, which promote inflammatory reactions and thrombosis. Based on the counteracting anti‐inflammatory and cardioprotective

Von Willebrand Factor Gene Variants Associate with Herpes simplex Encephalitis.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is a rare complication of Herpes simplex virus type-1 infection. It results in severe parenchymal damage in the brain.
