Hemoglobin polymorphism in inbred strains of rats (Rattus norvegicus)
Biochemical Genetics, 1982Hemoglobin phenotypes A and B were determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of erythrocyte lysates from 29 inbred strains of rats. Fourteen strains have phenotype A and fifteen have phenotype B, which are characterized by five and six hemoglobin bands, respectively.

Cholesterol Response in Inbred Strains of Rats, Rattus norvegicus
The Journal of Nutrition, 1981A hypercholesterolemic diet fed to rats revealed significant interstrain differences in plasma cholesterol levels. Hyperresponding and hyporesponding strains could be distinguished from normoresponding strains within 3 weeks. The increase in plasma cholesterol level was more than 300 mg/100 ml in the hyperresponding strains BN/Cpb, SD/Cpb and WE/Z and ...

Ethanol Clearance in Nine Inbred Rat Strains
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1984The rate of ethanol disappearance was determined for each of eight inbred rat strains and the N/Nih line of heterogeneous rats. There are significant differences in ethanol elimination rates in the strains tested. Females have rates significantly different from those of males in five of the eight inbred strains and in the N/Nih line.

Sustained nicotine release comparisons in six inbred rat strains
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1989The utility of an implantable nicotine reservoir for rats (INRr) in both sexes of several rat strains is described. INRrs with similar nicotine release rates produced higher blood nicotine levels in small female rats compared to larger male Sprague-Dawley rats.

Circadian timekeeping in hyperactive and hypertensive inbred rat strains
American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1996Inbred strains have been used to study genetic and physiological relationships among different aspects of circadian timekeeping, as well as relationships between circadian rhythmicity and other strain-specific traits. The present study characterized several features of circadian timekeeping in genetically hyperactive (WKHA) and genetically ...

Initial Sensitivity of Rat Inbred Strains to Acute Alcohol
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1984The ethanol sensitivity of eight inbred strains and one heterogeneous stock of rats has been determined by the assessment of “sleep time” and blood alcohol levels upon awakening. In addition, levels of liver alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenases and phenobarbital‐inducible aldehyde dehydrogenase were determined.

LITTER SIZES IN INBRED STRAINS OF RATS (RATTUS NORVEGICUS)
International Journal of Immunogenetics, 1979SummaryThe average litter sizes and reproductive performance of twenty‐five inbred strains of rats, maintained in a conventional colony in Pittsburgh, and twenty‐six inbred strains, maintained in a barrier facility at the National Institutes of Health, were calculated from data collected for periods of 3 and 10 years, respectively.

Heterotopic and orthotopic liver transplants in inbred rat strains
Microsurgery, 1979AbstractThe functioning and survival of orthotopic liver allotransplants in toto were compared with heterotopic partial and whole allotransplants in inbred rats. In contrast to the rapid and aggressive rejection of the heterotopic allografts, the orthotopic whole‐liver allografts survived for prolonged periods.

Screening of inbred rat strains for electrophoretic protein polymorphisms
Biochemical Genetics, 1978Nineteen inbred strains of the laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus) were investigated for genetic differences by starch and agarose gel electrophoretic techniques. For six out of 21 loci, interstrain differences were observed: Tf, 6PGD, Es-1, Es-4, Es-5, and Svp. The variants are briefly described and the allelic distributions are tabulated.

β-endorphin differentially affects inflammation in two inbred rat strains
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2006It has been shown that inflammation of rat paws elicits accumulation of opioid peptide beta-endorphin-containing immune cells in the inflamed subcutaneous tissue, contributing to immunocyte-produced pain suppression. However, the possible mechanisms involved in the pharmacological application of beta-endorphin in rat paw inflammation have not been ...
