Behavior Genetics, 1979
The first listing of inbred strains of rats was by Billingham and Silvers (1959). This is the fifth listing and has been substantially revised, although it is heavily dependent on previous listings (Festing and Staats, 1973). In contrast with previous listings, an attempt has been made to cite the original reference for any given strain characteristic.

Hemoglobin polymorphism in inbred strains of rats (Rattus norvegicus)
Biochemical Genetics, 1982Hemoglobin phenotypes A and B were determined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of erythrocyte lysates from 29 inbred strains of rats. Fourteen strains have phenotype A and fifteen have phenotype B, which are characterized by five and six hemoglobin bands, respectively.

Ethanol Clearance in Nine Inbred Rat Strains
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1984The rate of ethanol disappearance was determined for each of eight inbred rat strains and the N/Nih line of heterogeneous rats. There are significant differences in ethanol elimination rates in the strains tested. Females have rates significantly different from those of males in five of the eight inbred strains and in the N/Nih line.

Two types of electrocortical paroxysms in an inbred strain of rats
Neuroscience Letters, 1986In 10 subjects of a particular inbred strain of rats (WAG/Rij), two types of spike-wave complexes were detected in the cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) during the two recording hours. The first type, already well-known, occurred in 8 of the 10 rats. This type was seen both during sleep and wakefulness and was accompanied by behavioural concomitants,

Nest-building behaviour in male rats from three inbred strains: BN/HsdCpb, BDIX/Or1Ico and LEW/Mol
Animal Welfare, 2005Three inbred strains of male laboratory rat (BN/HsdCpb, BDIX/Or1Ico and LEW/Mol) were provided with nest boxes and nest materials, and were observed for nest-building activity. After 7 days, each cage and nest box was examined.

Circadian timekeeping in hyperactive and hypertensive inbred rat strains
American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1996Inbred strains have been used to study genetic and physiological relationships among different aspects of circadian timekeeping, as well as relationships between circadian rhythmicity and other strain-specific traits. The present study characterized several features of circadian timekeeping in genetically hyperactive (WKHA) and genetically ...

Initial Sensitivity of Rat Inbred Strains to Acute Alcohol
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1984The ethanol sensitivity of eight inbred strains and one heterogeneous stock of rats has been determined by the assessment of “sleep time” and blood alcohol levels upon awakening. In addition, levels of liver alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenases and phenobarbital‐inducible aldehyde dehydrogenase were determined.

Erythrocyte B1 Antigen in Inbred Rat Strains
1965Recognition of the antigenic mosaic in rats necessary for immunogenetic and immunobiological experiments is only in the beginning in comparison with our knowledge of the antigenic mosaic in mice. It is difficult to compare earlier findings because neither rat strains nor antisera used for the determination of erythrocyte antigens are available.

Characterization of a Sperm-Specific Antigen in Inbred Strains of Rats
International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 1980Rat sperm have a cell surface autoantigen which is common to at least ten inbred strains. The expression of this antigen is quantitatively different, and, among the strains tested, the BN strain appears to have the largest amount. The sperm of the B13 strain were examined in detail for a unique sperm antigen, because this strain is heterozygous for ...

Heterotopic and orthotopic liver transplants in inbred rat strains
Microsurgery, 1979AbstractThe functioning and survival of orthotopic liver allotransplants in toto were compared with heterotopic partial and whole allotransplants in inbred rats. In contrast to the rapid and aggressive rejection of the heterotopic allografts, the orthotopic whole‐liver allografts survived for prolonged periods.
