Viscoelastic Rayleigh waves II [PDF]
The number of possible surface waves on a viscoelastic half-space is investigated numerically as a function of the material parameters. The results are applied to simple theoretical models of viscoelastic behavior and also to experimental data. It is concluded that two surface waves are possible on some rocks and on nearly all solid polymers.

Rayleigh–Taylor shock waves [PDF]
Beginning from a state of hydrostatic equilibrium, in which a heavy gas rests atop a light gas in a constant gravitational field, Rayleigh–Taylor instability at the interface will launch a shock wave into the upper fluid. We have performed a series of large-eddy simulations which suggest that the rising bubbles of light fluid act like pistons ...

A review on microtremor H/V spectral ratio method
The microtremor H/V spectral ratio is the ratio of the horizontal component to the vertical component of the ambient seismic noise at different frequencies, recorded at the earth surface.

Wave propagation in nonlocal orthotropic micropolar elastic solids
The presented paper is concerned with the propagation of Rayleigh waves in an orthotropic nonlocal micropolar elastic half-space. The main aim of the paper is to derive dispersion equations of Rayleigh wave as well as Stroh formalism for the orthotropic ...

Viscoelastic Rayleigh waves [PDF]
A general analysis is given of the propagation of surface waves over a half-space of homogeneous isotropic linearly-viscoelastic material. Particular emphasis is placed on the properties of the particle paths. The detailed examination of particular models shows that (in contrast with elastic materials) (i) more than one surface wave may be possible ...

We propose a simple method for 1D S-wave velocity (Vs) profile estimation using a measured surface S-wave velocity (V1) and peak frequency of the observed microtremor horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR).

Under special kinematic conditions helium atoms impinging upon a crystal surface can be inelastically trapped into a surface bound state and ride the created Rayleigh wave. This special case of phonon-assisted selective adsorption, leading to an atom-phonon bound state (atomic polaron), can explain previously unassigned resonant features observed in ...

Asymptotic Formulation for the Rayleigh Wave on a Nonlocally Elastic Half-Space
This paper deals with the Rayleigh wave, propagating on a nonlocally elastic, linearly isotropic half-space, excited by a prescribed surface loading. The consideration develops the methodology of hyperbolic–elliptic models for Rayleigh and Rayleigh-type ...

Rayleigh wave nonlinearity [PDF]
The elastic nonlinearity in Rayleigh waves is investigated theoretically. Studies have revealed that nonlinearity in Rayleigh waves involves nonlocal as well as local effects [Parker and Talbot, J. Elast. 15, 389 (1985)]. Finite amplitude effects on sound in fluids are entirely local, and the effects on different wavelets are therefore independent.

Modeling linear Rayleigh wave sound fields generated by angle beam wedge transducers
In this study, the reciprocity theorem for elastodynamics is transformed into integral representations, and the fundamental solutions of wave motion equations are obtained using Green’s function method that yields the integral expressions of sound beams ...
