Robustness of RC buildings to progressive collapse: Influence of building height

Engineering Structures, 2019
Abstract The influence of building height on the robustness of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings to resist progressive collapse is investigated. Beginning with the initial removal of a corner column at the ground level, the study attempts to identify the main global resisting mechanisms that develop in the structure after successive column ...

A CAD system for building structures in ‘BUILDING RC/SRC/S’

Computer-Aided Design, 1976
Abstract A CAD software system is described for the structural design of buildings. While generally similar to GENESYS-RC-BUILDING/1 of England and DEMOS-E of Japan, this system allows for greater freedom of design than the above two systems. As the system is intended for the design of buildings in Japan, a country prone to strong earthquakes ...

Seismic Assessment of Existing RC Buildings

2003
Two procedures are presented for seismic assessment of individual RC buildings on the basis of member seismic chord rotation demands. In the (simpler) “preliminary” evaluation procedure, inelastic chord rotation demands are estimated from linear analysis, while forces for brittle failure modes are computed in a capacity-design fashion.

Analysis of RC Buildings by Metamodel Approaches

2020
Response of RC structures is very complex and dynamic in nature because of the vulnerabilities that exist in geometry, material properties and loading. To represent the random dynamic responses accurately, stochastic analysis is chosen here. The stochastic analysis can be done by two types of methods, like statistical and the non-statistical approaches.

Structural Strengthening of RC Buildings for Enhanced Seismic Resistance

2020
This study aims to present a strengthening technique for the seismic resistance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to earthquake effects. The entire process is illustrated with a case study of an existing RC building. In this study, the building is examined with field surveys and numerical analyses.

Seismic Assessment of RC Frame Buildings

2016
In the chapter, the N2 method and the non-linear dynamic analysis (NDA) are applied for the assessment of seismic performance of two variants of a 4-storey reinforced concrete (RC) frame building. The first variant is represented by the bare frames, whereas in the second variant infill panels are included in the upper three storeys, thus creating a ...

Extreme Modal Combinations for Pushover Analysis of RC Buildings

Key Engineering Materials, 2013
The pushover method is a practical procedure for comprehensive nonlinear analysis of structures subjected to seismic action. Application of this method, in accordance with the Eurocode 8 rules and due to engineering simplicity, favours application utilizing the first mode.

THE EFFECTS OF THE SEISMIC INPUT ON THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF RC BUILDINGS

Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN 2015), 2015
This work is aimed at investigating the variation of the seismic response of RC structures subjected to different ensembles of ground motions in the nonlinear dynamic analy-sis for the seismic assessment of existing RC buildings. At the current time indeed, all the main International Seismic Codes provide a soil classification which is based on the ...

A hybrid control strategy for the seismic retrofitting irregular RC buildings of irregular RC buildings

2012
In this paper it is investigated the performance of a hybrid control system for the reduction of the seismic vulnerability of existing reinforced concrete (RC) asymmetric structures with coupled modes. For this kind of structures the purely passive control system is not always able to warrantee an effective response control, due to the modal coupling ...

Knowledge-Based Performance Assessment of Existing RC Buildings

Journal of Earthquake Engineering, 2011
One of the most challenging aspects of the seismic assessment of existing buildings is the characterization of structural modeling uncertainties. Recent codes, such as Eurocode 8, seem to synthesize the effect of structural modeling uncertainties in the so-called confidence factors that are applied to mean material property estimates.
